Macular Degeneration
During the summer, it is easier to remember to protecting our eyes with sunglasses and a hat. But the eyes and delicate eyelid skin can be even more at risk in the winter months. Often overcast skies and lack of direct sunlight makes us think that our eyes donâ€™t need to be shielded from the invisible UV rays. But exposure to UV radiation in the winter can make the eyes more prone to cataracts, macular degeneration, periocular skin cancer and aging changes of the eyelid skin.

"I highly recommend Dr. Lattman!! Â She and her staff are incredible. Â I saw her upon the recommendation of another one of my doctors after seeking a specialist of ocular surgery to repair a prior seizure-related injury. Â A few years ago, I had a grand mal seizures at work (I have focal epilepsy) and basically split the right half of my face open from above my right eyebrow down to my cheek. Â The doctor that stitched me up at the ER was great, but that didnâ€™t prevent the scar tissue from building up and tiny muscle/bone fractures in the area, which caused my eyes to appear asymmetrical. Â Most people wouldnâ€™t notice, but I look at myself in the mirror every morning and I could see the different pre and post-accident. Â What seemed minor to most was bothering me on a daily basis, not just for cosmetic reasons, but also because my right eye was tearing out of control. Â Dr. Lattman took one look at me and saw the same asymmetrical issue I saw every day. Â She didnâ€™t try to minimize how I felt about it, like most people, and I really appreciated that. Often patients combine filler or surgery with laser resurfacing. I use a state of the art Lutronic CO2 laser. This laser reduces facial lines and wrinkles, gives the skin a more smooth appearance, reduces sun damage and improves skin pigmentation.The laser stimulates collagen which helps with the elasticity and tightness of the eyelid skin.

Fall is just around the corner. Days get shorter and the weather will turn colder and drier. This is the time of year when I start seeing patients in my office with dry eye, cracked and itchy eyelid skin and eczema. Here are some great tips for transitioning into fall while keeping your eyes healthy and looking good.
Lesions
Xanthelasmas are yellowish, soft, flat skin lesions that grow on the inner corners of the eyelids. They are deposits of cholesterol in the skin. They grow slowly over time and may start out as several small growths and them combine into a larger lesion. The growths usually cause no pain or discomfort, so my patients will likely request removal for cosmetic reasons.

In addition to traditional skin care, Botox is a powerful tool in the battle against facial wrinkles. When facial muscles contract, the overlying skin responds with a wrinkle. Â This action is responsible for the characteristic features of â€œcrowâ€™sâ€™ feet,â€ forehead furrows, and frown lines. Botox temporarily weakens the muscle that is treated. Areas treated with Botox remain smooth and soft when you smile or frown.
