Colonoscopy
Before undergoing a colonoscopy, your doctor will provide specific instructions about how to prepare for your procedure. In order to ensure your colon can be thoroughly and accurately examined, patients will need to consume a laxative regimen. You will also need to arrange for someone to escort you home from your procedure. Prior to your colonoscopy, you will receive medication so that you experience no discomfort throughout the procedure. Once sedated, your doctor will carefully guide the endoscope through your digestive tract.

Dr. Oliner practices General Gastroenterology and his interests include colon cancer screening, irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, nutrition, gallstone disease, generalized abdominal pain, constipation, reflux disease, as well as hemorrhoids. Additionally, he is currently treating patients with hepatitis as well as pancreaticobiliary diseases. He performs screening of colon cancer and is adept in diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy, endoscopy, Bravo pH monitoring and capsule endoscopy.

Internal Medicine
Dr. Hernandez completed his internal medicine residency at NYU Downtown Hospital. This was followed by a fellowship in Clinical Nutrition at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center. During this time he was an Instructor in Clinical Medicine and subsequently became a research fellow at Columbia University’s Celiac Disease Center. He completed his fellowship training in Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Tulane University’s School of Medicine in New Orleans.

After spending some time as a gastroenterologist for Ochsner Clinic, he returned to New York City where he currently practices. His focus areas include: colon cancer screening, polypectomy, upper endoscopy, dyspepsia, celiac disease, anorectal disorders and chronic liver disease.

Ultrasound
When you arrive at our NYC gastroenterology center for your procedure, you will be given a blood test to ensure that your blood is able to clot properly. In certain cases, you may also undergo an ultrasound to determine the best area to insert the needle for your liver biopsy. The procedure itself takes only a few seconds. A needle is inserted, and a small piece of liver tissue is removed. This tissue is then sent to the lab so that it can be examined and the cause of any liver dysfunction can be determined. The entire procedure should take between 15 and 20 minutes.
