The Arts & Business Council of New York ( ABC/NY ) is committed to joining the resources and reducing the distinction between arts and business. It serves both the arts and the business communities of New York, with programming in volunteerism, professional development, leadership development, and economic impact. The arts offer creativity, both onstage/in exhibition and in problem-solving. They change lives: delighting the general public, celebrating and communicating cultural diversity, engaging audiences and artists in life-long enrichment. Business offers financial and in-kind support, through strategic philanthropy that advances corporate missions and through sponsorships that enhance marketing efforts. More important are the resources of intellectual capital: volunteers eager to make a difference through sharing their expertise in planning, organization, marketing, PR, communications, financial analysis, technology, human resources, mentoring, and real estate. Together, arts and business strengthen the leadership staff and volunteer of New York's cultural treasures of every discipline and every size. Together, arts and business excite and energize existing work forces and can guide young men and women to join in fulfilling careers. The Arts & Business Council was created in 1965 by a group of business leaders from the New York Board of Trade, with the purpose of creating closer ties between business and the arts. Sybil Simon was hired as the first executive director, leading the organization through 1988. Arts membership was started in 1970, and the organization was incorporated as a 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) nonprofit in 1973. The Business Volunteers for the Arts program was launched in 1975 and, with assistance from the Rockefeller Foundation, replicated across the country. Through the 1980s and 1990s, under the leadership of Nancy Meier then, in 1996, Gary P. Steuer, the Arts & Business Council expanded its affiliation with like organizations in other cities and started the National Arts Marketing Project and National Arts Forum Series. In 2005, the Arts & Business Council merged with the national organization Americans for the Arts ; national affiliates are now coordinated by the Private Sector Affairs department of Americans for the Arts, and ABC/NY is both a division of Americans for the Arts and still its own, separately incorporated nonprofit.
