Avascular necrosis (AVN), also called osteonecrosis, is a condition where part of the bone loses blood supply and the bone gradually dies. This can be caused from steroid use, chemotherapy or radiation treatments, or have no known cause at all. It is a progressive disorder than can eventually lead to collapse of the bone that is affected. If caught early, however, sometimes surgery and/or medication can be used to stall or reverse the progression.

Arthroscopy
Hip arthroscopy is a relatively new surgical technique that can be effectively employed to treat a variety of hip conditions. Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure in which an arthroscope is inserted into a joint. The benefits of arthroscopy involve smaller incisions, faster healing, a more rapid recovery, and less scarring. Arthroscopic surgical procedures are often performed on an outpatient basis and the patient is able to return home on the same day.

Dr. Ranawat, born in Sarwania, India, began his medical education and Orthopaedic residency training in India. His training continued in the United States with fellowships in reconstructive and hand surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery from 1966 to 1969. He became an attending Orthopaedic surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery in 1969 and practiced at that institution until 1994 when he moved his practice to Lenox Hill Hospital. There, Dr. Ranawat served as The James A. Nicholas Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Director of the Ranawat Orthopaedic Center at Lenox Hill Hospital. Currently, Dr. Ranawat is a Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and is an Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Hip Replacement
Total Hip Replacement (THR) procedure replaces all or part of the hip joint with an artificial device (prosthesis) to eliminate pain and restore joint movement.
Knee Replacement
This simply means that only a part of the knee joint is replaced through a smaller incision than would normally be used for a total knee replacement. The knee joint is made up of 3 compartments, the patellofemoral and medial and lateral compartments between the femur and tibia (i.e. the long bones of the leg). Often only one of these compartments wears out, usually the medial one. If you have symptoms and X-ray findings suggestive of this then you may be suitable for this procedure.

Physical Therapy
The rotator cuff is collection of 4 muscles that help lift and rotate the shoulder. Most tears occur over time due to degeneration, but some are acute. You can also have a partial or complete tear, and tear more than one tendon at a time. The most commonly torn tendon is the supraspinatus. Common symptoms of a rotator cuff tear include pain with lifting of the arm, weakness, and pain at night. Physical therapy can be helpful to strengthen other muscles and improve function and pain, but if a tendon has a complete tear, surgery is usually the best option because the tendon will not repair on its own. Surgery is generally arthroscopic, and can usually be performed as an outpatient. Steroid injections are rarely indicated in rotator cuff tears because it can make the tear worse by weakening the tendon.
