At New Hyde Park Podiatry we utilize diagnostic ultrasound to determine many different bone and soft tissue foot and ankle pathologies. The procedure is completely non-invasive, painless and is performed right in our office. Within a few minutes, we are able to evaluate and diagnose a multitude of problems such as neuromas, tendonitis, bursitis, bone spurs, ulcers, arthritis and plantar fasciitis and how extensive the pathology may be. The images are captured to our patients' charts and we then have an opportunity to discuss and implement a comprehensive treatment plan immediately. Venous Doppler is a specialized ultrasound procedure that evaluates the veins in the foot in order to determine the cause of varicose veins and other vascular conditions, as well as plan out treatment of affected veins and identify blood clots, vessel narrowing, tumors and other abnormalities within the veins. Bunion surgery is usually performed on an out-patient basis which means patients get to go home on the same day of the surgery. Many of our patients start walking on the operative foot within a few days and can return to work within a short period of time. It is our objective to get you back on your feet as soon possible.
Orthopedic Surgery
X-ray imaging, also called radiography, is a fast and easy way to identify and diagnose foot and ankle injuries and disorders such as arthritis, cancer, osteoporosis, fractures and infections. It is also used in conjunction with orthopedic surgery to to ensure that a fracture or other injury has been properly aligned, and it can aid in the detection and diagnosis of cysts, tumors and severe infections of the bones. Bunions
Bunions are due primarily to genetic factors, but can become painful over time due to trauma, ill-fitting shoes and poor foot structure. What happens, is that the bone connected to the big toe starts to drift outward pushing the big toe sideways into the other toes which can also lead to painful hammertoes, corns and calluses.
Ingrown Toenails
An ingrown toenail occurs when a corner of the nail grows into the flesh of the toe, causing redness and swelling, followed by pain and often infection. Ingrown toenails can occur due to improper trimming of the toenail, trauma or genetic factors.

Corns
Hammertoes are an abnormal "V"-shaped bending of the little toes. Caused by stiffened tendons, hammertoes often form because of a muscle imbalance, arthritis, a hereditary condition, an injury, or tight shoes that squeeze the toes. They may be flexible (the toes can still be moved at the damaged joint) or rigid (the toes are immobile). Many people with hammertoes develop swelling, redness, stiffness, or painful corns or calluses as the toes rub against the inside of the shoes.

Fungal toenails are caused by an organism that grows in and under the nail. The fungus likes to grow in warm, moist places like your shoes. Many patients pick up fungal toenail infections in the gym locker room, from a nail salon, wet shoes or from trauma. Fungus can stay in the nails for many years and can be passed from one person to another. Treatment for fungal toenails includes topical and oral medications, which used together are very effective.

Treatment for the condition typically involves shoes with soft, roomy toe boxes and toe exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles. Commercially available straps, cushions or non-medicated corn pads may also relieve symptoms. Hammertoes can become inflexible and require surgery.

Treatment for ingrown toenails is performed by gently numbing the toe, and then removing the offending corner of the nail. If you have chronic ingrown toenails, we can remove the root in the office to permanently prevent re-growth of the ingrown portion of the nail.
Foot Warts
Foot Warts (Plantar Warts) are a common foot condition that we treat in our practice. Plantar Warts are caused by a virus. You may notice little black dots in the wart. People sometimes think these dots are splinters. They are actually the blood vessels that nourish the wart. You can get viral warts anywhere you walk barefoot, such as the local pool, karate studio, dance studio, locker room or even from a pedicure salon. If you have one or more growths on the bottom of your foot that may or may not be painful, chances are it's a plantar wart. Our Podiatrist offers many wart removal treatment options. The type of treatment received depends upon the patient's needs.
Plantar Fasciitis
At New Hyde Park Podiatry, our Podiatris t treat a lot of heel pain or plantar fasciitis. Many of the symptoms include pain when you first get up in the morning, burning, numbness and increased symptoms by the end of the day. The pain is usually caused by tightening of the plantar fascia ligament located on the bottom of the foot. The plantar fascia ligament supports the arch. When you're resting, the ligament contracts. As you start to walk, the ligament pulls and may tear slightly causing pain. Heel pain can also be brought on by trauma, over exertion, ill- fitting shoes or poor foot alignment.
