Overall
False promises, subtle ongoing neglect

My 91-year-old mother has been living at Sunrise of Pikesville for about 4 months, having moved to Baltimore from Minneapolis. She is legally blind and has vascular dementia, so she lives in the memory unit where all other residents have Alzheimer's disease. Her exquisite living quarters were the main selling point, but there has not been care to match. The caregivers are poorly trained, come and go, and no one seems to know the difference between dementia and Alzheimer's, which is substantial. Often my mother has been mistaken for a nearly normal person and left to her own devices when she really needed assistance. Although I'm disabled myself, I have needed to visit nearly every day to sort out all the crazy things that keep happening, including theft of clothing, towels, personal care products, her laundry bag (about 9 times), and snacks. There have also been problems such as urine and fecal matter left all over the toilet and on the bathroom floor, an unwillingness to help her bathe, and a nightly race to get all the residents in bed by an arbitrary hour that doesn't take their individual needs into account. Often I have taken over in getting her ready for bed in order to relieve stressed-out employees. Each time one of these incidents happened I sought help and a change, and there have been some signs of improvement. But one day recently my mother was having a bad day and refused to get dressed, so she was left alone in her room, without meals, until I happened to arrive for a visit right before dinner. Worst of all, recently there was an outbreak of scabies in her unit, which was covered up on grounds of "privacy laws." This highly contagious mite infection eventully spread to my mother, but no nurse would go to her room to examine her. By then two employess had confided that five other residents had the infection, and they described to me how it had spread. After waiting a week for a nurse to show up, I called her doctor and the local health department. The health department properly ordered treatment for all the residents at once, but my mother was left itching and scratching her bleeding lesions for another four days before the treatment was finally administered. To this day the families have not been informed, even though we have been also at risk to get this infection. All this time I've been doing my mother's laundry, owing to a vague warning from my initial contact at Sunrise. Laundry is handled in a sloppy way and the machines often are broken, causing it to be sent to another floor and resulting in vanishing items. This month's Halloween decorations have included tombstones in front of the main entrance and two huge skulls in the windows next to the doors. When I objected to the insensitivity of these items, I was told that my opinion was just one of many and therefore did not count. The person in charge of this and also the recreational program comes across as controlling and mean spirited, so that others who don't like the decorations, especially the employees, are afraid to say anything to her. With respect to the food, the upstairs dining areas are not as good as the first floor dining area. There have been problems with the week-end cooks, each new one being worse than the one who left. Employee turnover is rapid, and the better longterm employees are let go when they ask for a raise.

Be wary of UP selling

Sunrise id a for-profit company and your elder family member is an asset. Be very wary of the fact thye want to add services to their base line "care" which is really little to no care or assistance at all, it's just a room and meals. Any so-called assistance is spare and everything comes at a price. A FAR GREATER ISSUE is the fact the minute you get signed, sealed and yes, delivered (moved in) they try to get your loved one into the far more expenseive memory unit and then start pushing the extras. Better to carefully check out non-profits who do not have this bottom line mentality like publically traded (with financial woes) Sunrise does.

Pushy

Very pushy sales woman. She kept trying to get us to sign paperwork before we were ready saying that her apartments went fast and would not be here if we waited. The carpet was coming up, walls were dirty and residents looked like they were not bathed.

Great place

My great-grandmother lives in the Sunrise of Lorton Station. This place is fantastic and the staff is exceptional to say the least! If you visit often like I do, they know you by first name and make you feel more than at home. My grandma loves it there, and has had nothing but nice things to say of the staff and the care she receives. Kudos to Sunrise of Lorton Station for making the difficult decision of moving my grandma to assisted living an easy transition for her and all of us too!

Grandparents are well taken care of here

Kudos to this fabulous facility for housing my dear grandparents in a most spectacular haven!

I'm so happy to have had the chance to visit them last week, just two weeks after they had moved in.

Yay- I got the grand tour and was impressed along every step of our path!

The staff is remarkably kind and helpful. My grandparents raved about how well they've been treated...with absolute kindness and positive attitudes! My grandma said the staff members provide service with a smile...how refreshing!

What I found very cool is they have a resident kitty cat and dog...what a fabulous way to brighten the resident's days!

The living quarters are gorgeous and the shared areas, such as dining and media areas were decorated with flair and were very comfy...top notch EVERYthing!

YAY- they have Bingo for grandma!

My grandparents have all their meals cooked for them (yes- every meal!). Laundering and cleaning also provided by the staff.

Sunrise has facilities all over the country.
