When most people have heel pain, what they are suffering from is plantar fasciitis. This is the inflammation of a thick band of tissueâ€”the plantar fasciaâ€”that runs from the heel bone to the toes. This band provides an important connection and helps support the arch of the foot, so it is susceptible to stress from overuse as well as arch abnormalities such as flat feet or high arches.

He completed his residency in 2000 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Denver, CO, which included extensive training in foot surgery, diabetic care, wound care, podiatric medicine, and biomechanics/orthotics.

Diabetes can leave your feet especially susceptible to problems. Poor circulation caused by the disease can greatly slow the time it takes for injuries on your feet to heal, while neurological damage associated with the condition may make you unable to feel an injury when it happens. This is a dangerous combination that can turn a small cut into a deep ulcer or an infection. Damage could progress so far as to require amputation. It unfortunately happens often.

It doesnâ€™t matter if youâ€™re a professional athlete or a â€œweekend warrior,â€ your feet and ankles can take a lot of force during activities and a sports injury is always a possibility. Ankle sprains, torn ligaments, shin splints and other painful soft tissue injuries fall under this category, but so do other conditions such as blisters, calluses, and athleteâ€™s foot. Fungus
A fungal nail infection, medically known as onychomycosis, are most often caused by category of fungus known as dermatophytes. These tiny organisms thrive in warm, moist, dark environments such as around shower rooms and public pools, but shoes frequently fit this bill as well. When the fungus is able to slip into a small cut or beneath the nail, it can settle in. As the fungus grows and spreads, the nails can turn darker and duller, grow thicker, and become brittle, crumbly, or distorted in shape.

The skin is already a hard-working and largely under-appreciated organ, protecting our bodies from all sorts of nasty invaders and dangers. One of the toughest areas for our skin to work is on the feet, and itâ€™s easy to see why when you think about it. Physical Therapy
While patients can walk after some surgical procedures; others may require a friend or family member to transport them home. It is important to follow all post-operative instructions for proper healing and recovery. This may include the wearing of casts, surgical boots, splits, or bandages. These are to assist in limiting or preventing the bearing of weight on the affected foot. Additional care may be needed following surgery, including bandage changes, physical therapy, custom orthotics, or special instructions. In most cases, patients may return to normal footwear after the healing process is complete.

There are several different ways to treat toenail fungus, and the right treatment may depend on the type and severity of the infection. Medicated polishes and creams can sometimes be applied to the affected nails. This form of treatment is often more effective if the nails are professionally thinned first with a file or other tool. Heel Spurs
If heel pain doesnâ€™t stem from plantar fasciitis, a significant number of other causes could be at hand. Pain present beneath the heel could be as simple as a stone bruise that will gradually vanish with rest. It could also be a heel spur, a growth of calcium on the heel bone. These are sometimes related to cases of plantar fasciitis, but are not always responsible for causing pain in themselves.
