Established in 1984, Independent Physicians Network, Inc. was developed as a not-for-profit organization by a group of 200 physicians, mostly pediatricians, in response to Wisconsin’s changes to the Medicaid managed care program. Since then, the focus of IPN broadened to include commercial managed care, adult primary care providers, and a full complement of specialists was added.
Sleep Disorders
Dr. Waleed S. Najeeb specializes in Internal Medicine and has been a practicing physician for more than twenty-five years. He has been a member of IPN for twenty years and serves as chair of the ACCSW Management Committee and the IPN Review Committee. Dr. Najeeb completed his pre-med studies and received his medical degree from the Damascus University School of Medicine. He is a Fellow of American College of Chest Physicians and Fellow of American Academy of Sleep Medicine and member of the American Board of Pulmonary Disease, American Board of Sleep Disorder Medicine, and American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Najeeb has spend the last eighteen years as the Medical Director of the multi-specialty practice Medpoint Clinics.
Family Practice
Dr. Barbara Hummel is a specialist in Family Medicine and has been in practice for over thirty years. She has been a member of IPN for nine years. Dr. Hummel received her medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. She completed an internship at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee and completed her residency at University of Iowa. Dr. Hummel opened her own independent practice after initially working for a closed model HMO group.

Dr. Nancy Bratanow has specialized in Pain Management and Anesthesiology for more than thirty years. She is Board Certified in Pain Medicine, Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Subspecialty of Pain Medicine. She has been a member of IPN for more than ten years and currently serves as the Chair of the Credentialing Committee. Dr. Bratanow received her medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School, Madison. She was in academic medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin for twenty years and served as the Director of the Pain Management Center and Pain Fellowship, and as a Palliative Care attending physician.
Gastroenterology
Dr. Mike Schmalz specializes in the treatment of infants, children and adolescents experiencing gastrointestinal diseases. Dr. Schmalz has been with IPN since 2020. He received his medical degree from The Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland. After completing residency at Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine in Michigan, Dr. Schmalz went on to complete his fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology at The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. He has also earned his Master of Public Health at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He is on the Board of Directors for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation.
