Overall

My first and last experience at community vet clinic was the worst experience I have ever had at any business, vet or otherwise. My lab was attacked by another dog and, new to the Bayview area, I had no local vet and randomly selected them to call. When I told them what happened and asked if he could be seen, the lady I spoke with first told me no that they were booked but then after putting me on hold, told me one of their doctors was done early with surgeries and was available to see him. Mind you, I would have been perfectly understanding if they could not see him and I would have taken him elsewhere or to the emergency vet clinic I work at (which was not my initial idea only because it is 30 mins away) (but in hindsight was what I should have done).

When I got to the clinic and walked in with my bleeding dog, one of the receptionists (dark hair) looked at me disgusted and said "would you mind waiting outside with him?" Not all with it, I turned around and walked him outside and stood there for a couple seconds in the cold and windy weather while I got a grip on what just happened. I then stormed inside and asked them how long they expected me to stand outside in the cold with my injured dog and let them know I was more than willing to go elsewhere. I explained to them how extremely rude and unbelievable it is to basically tell someone their dog is bleeding too much and you need to wait outside. FYI I didn't immediately go elsewhere because I didn't want to waste anymore time trying to find a vet. He could have had internal injuries or something that I could not see. A bit later, the female doctor came out and took us back outside to look him over. After getting more information she said she was going to take him in the back to look him over. I came back inside and dark-haired receptionist who seriously needs a reality check began to say condescendingly that she made us walk out because she was concerned about infection control, transmittable diseases, and OSHA. which I then responded I work at an emergency vet clinic, used to work at family practice. I am perfectly aware of blood transmittable diseases but this is a hospital setting and that is not the way you handle it. You take the animal into a room or in the back immediately, you follow them around with a rag and sanitizer, you wrap a towel on their wound (which I had, just needed to get him in the door so I could put it back on), you keep other dogs away, bug you don't tell them to wait outside all disgusted. She responded to my vet experience by saying "well maybe your clinics aren't up to date on their OSHA and infectious disease protocol". At that point I withdrew from arguing with the idiot. I sat and waited for the doctor to update me with the plan of action and what she found after cleaning odie up and examining him. 25 mins later. Nothing. So I asked what was going on and they said he was being stitched up. Uuuuuggghhhhh. Why would you not talk to me first?! I figured he'd need stitches and of course I was going to pay for it but you ALWAYS talk to the owners before doing anything. What if I didn't have the money? It was $250. And on the medical records that I took with me it says "owner elected" that treatment plan. I never elected anything. That is so illegal!

In the end, my pup was fine and that's all that matters. One of his stitches came out and they did a really crappy job at bandaging his wound so I ended up having to take him to a different doctor but as I said, my boy is A-ok so that's all that matters. And the fact that I will never ever recommend that vet office to anyone.

I can tell that the doctor is serious with his job and wouldn't settle to just giving little advice. If I need a doctor for my pets in the future, I will definitely come back here.

check the med labels

The vet was nice, although I got charged when he "showed" me how to clean my dog's ears. Their prices are a little above the norm, but that's a minor complaint. I agree with the other reviewer on the front desk staff--there are a couple that are very rude and shouldn't have that type of job, if they don't like it. My main complaint though is two times on two different occasions, I have gotten meds with wrong labels attached--one time they put the wrong weight of my dog (which could affect the dosage) and another time, they put down wrong directions on how to administer the meds (the vet told me one thing, and the instructions were completely different--when and how much to give). It's close and that's why I go there, but I am cautious with every visit and double-check things. They need to really work on their accuracy--these things should NOT happen, and especially two different times!

Less than flattering

Called to find out the cost & timeframe to get annual vaccinations for my Golden Retriever and the person answering phone was very short and rude! She acted like she didn't have time for me, and me calling was an inconvenience too her. I've never been there before and this is how they treat people. Cant imagine how they treat you when you are a customer. Not exactly the way to go about getting a new customer especially nowadays.

Caring Vets

This place is wonderful. We had recently moved to a new part of town, and wanted a vet closer to home. Every time we take our dog there, they are prompt, kind, friendly, and (most of all) thorough. I took Chipper in for some behavioral things (he was just being really whiney and wouldn't settle down), and the vet spent over an hour with us. It is very important to them that you really understand what is going on with your pet. Also, with the behavioral stuff, they would explain what to do, why some people adhere to that theory, why some people don't like it, and why it works (how it ties in with the dog's natural behaviors). I am moving to another part of the country later this year, and will be really sad to leave this clinic!

Best I have had!

I am in the military and move every few years which means I must change vets every few years. I have lived all over th USA and Community Vet is the best vet I have had in my 12 yr career. Recently my cat Ellie passed away of a stroke. She died as I was driving over to the vet and I barged in there like a crazy lady screaming and crying. The entire staff was so kind to me, and treated Ellie with dignity. After they sent me a condolence card and the entire staff signed it. Also their prices are very fair. The most expensive I have had was living in Hamton Roads, Virginia. So when I came here it was a shock to see how much less they charge for services here. I got my Ellie cremated and they had her ashes back to me within days. I also take my dog there and they treat him very kind. He had two teeth pulled and when I went to pick him up, he wasn't all stressed out like he has been with prior vets. This place is very good, and I take all my pets there. It will be sad when I transfer to DC next summer becuase it will be hard to find a staff this nice again.

great place

My dog has been going to this clinic for over 10 years, we moved to a different neighborhood 15 miles aways but I still will travel the distance to the clinic. The staff has went out of their way to help me. One evening I needed insulin for my dog and the clinic was closing early. The tech saw me pull up and went back into the clinic to get my medication even though the clinic was closed. She allowed me to come in and pay the next visit since they had already locked the door. I have been impressed with all the vets at the clinic and would definately recomend it to anyone

The Best Treatment for Your Pet

My aging Pug dog was miserable for several years with chronic ear infections causing itching, pain, foul smells, and certainl much stress. I went to St. Francis Animal Hospital regularly for various cremes and medication but nothing ever helped my poor dog.

Over a year ago, my daughter recommened Dr. Mark Thomas at the Community Veterinary Clinic on Chase. From the beginning of our meeting with Dr. Thomas, I sensed this professional was informed, experienced, and genuinely concerned abot my dog, Klaude.

With regular appointments, ear flushing treatments, and tests for the specific bacteria in my dogs ears, Dr. Thomas perscribed the proper medications and things only got better for Klaude. It was several months into treatment and Klaude's ears were healing and looking well. This was a miracle to me and a blessing.

Now my dog has healthy ears and we are religious about exams and ongoing care so we may never reach a dangerous situation again.

I love the staff at this clinic. All the personnel are caring and concerned. Dr. Mark Thomas and staff are A++++++ in my book and I will continue to take Klaude there and recommend this clinic to anyone.
