In about half of patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria, the explanation is that body’s immune system is, in a sense, overactive. The urticaria represents an “autoimmune” phenomenon – the immune system (which is charged with fighting off infection) is attacking the normal tissue of the body and causing inflammation. One example of an autoimmune disease is rheumatoid arthritis (inflammation of the joints).HOWEVER, having “autoimmune” chronic hives DOES NOT mean that a given patient will end up with another autoimmune disease. Even though certain hive sufferers have an autoimmune problem causing their rash, there is not presently any specific treatment for them besides the usual medications for urticaria. In the other half of patients whose chronic hives are not autoimmune in nature, medical science has no idea what is causing their misery.

Dr. Rolando A. NuÃ±ez joined Asthma and Allergy Associates of Florida in 2011, after completing his Pediatric Allergy/Immunology and Adult Allergy/Immunology Fellowship at National Jewish Health. National Jewish Health is widely regarded as the #1 respiratory hospital in the United States. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at California State University, Long Beach, prior to attending medical school at the University of Illinois, Chicago. He is specialized in pediatric care completing his internship and residency in pediatrics at UCSF-Fresno. During his fellowship Dr. NuÃ±ez focused his research on Obesity and its effects on Asthma, an area where extensive research still continues. Dr. NuÃ±ez is a fellow of both the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) and the American College of Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). He is certified by the American Board of Allergy/Immunology. He was born in Puerto Rico and is fluent in both Spanish and English.
Primary Care
Anti-IgE treatment (omalizumab) has been around for several years. It is used in the more severe allergic asthmatics who donâ€™t respond to the usual asthma treatment. It is given as an injection once or twice a month. In carefully selected patients, it can be dramatically effective. It is usually only given in asthma specialists offices, as opposed to a primary care office.
Emergency Care
Carry and know how to use an injectable epinephrine device to treat emergency reactions. Teach family members and other people close to you how to use epinephrine, and wear an ID bracelet that describes your allergy. If a reaction occurs, have someone take you to the emergency room, even if symptoms subside. Afterwards, get follow-up care from an allergist.

Talk to your doctor. This severe allergic reaction can happen again but can be prevented with the help of good medical advice. Your doctor may recommend consultation with an allergist to discuss avoidance of stings, emergency treatment and self-treatment measures, and a preventative immunization program to eliminate the danger.

Dr. Yasmeen Khan was born and raised in India. She earned her medical degree from Lady Hardinge Medical College and MD in Pharmacology from Maulana Azad Medical College both at Delhi University. She completed her Internal Medicine residency training at the University of Miami/JFK Medical Center campus. She then did her Pediatric Allergy/Immunology and Adult Allergy/Immunology Fellowship training at the State University of New York-Buffalo. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and in Allergy/Immunology. Dr. Khan has also completed a clinical research Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Asthma/Allergy at the University of Florida (Gainesville, FL). She is a member of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the American Medical Association, and member of the Indian Pharmacological Society. She is fluent in English, Urdu and Hindi.

Symptoms of non-allergic drug reactions vary depending on the type of medication. People being treated with chemotherapy often suffer from vomiting and hair loss. Other people experience flushing, itching or a drop in blood pressure from intravenous dyes used in x-rays or CT scans. Certain antibiotics irritate the intestines, which can cause stomach cramps and diarrhea. If you take ACE (angiotension converting enzyme) inhibitors for high blood pressure, you may develop a cough or facial and tongue swelling.

We allergists often see patients who are experiencing sneezing and wheezing that is due directly to breathing in cat and dog dander particles. Symptoms can improve greatly with total avoidance of the pets, but patients are usually unwilling to part with their beloved animals.

Lubricants and Emollients:Â The best lubricant for any individual patient is found by trial and error. Some patients find something that works for a while, then have switch when it stops working. Creams are often beneficial, with ointments being better for thicker skin. Products containing ceramides (e.g. cerave) are thought to be very effective. Skin care should be done 2-4 times a day, including before bedtime, and after exercising and showering. Apply emollients to the entire skin surface when still wet after bathing to keep the skin moist. Try water-washable creams and ointments, Vaseline, vegetable oils (CriscoÂ®), or those containing urea (including Moisturel, Lacticare, and Sarna). It is best to avoid lanolin- and paraben-containing medications. Read labels carefully.
