X-rays
The Dental Cone Beam Computed Tomagraph (Cone Beam CT) allows us to capture a three-dimensional scan of your teeth, soft tissues, nerve pathways, and bone all in a single image. This state-of-the-art radiographic technology gives us an extremely precise and more complete look at the oral environment that needs treatment and helps us to accurately treat cases in which traditional dental x-rays may not be sufficient. This technology is non-invasive, painless, and accurate, which allows comfort to be a top priority while giving you the most complete treatment planning options available anywhere.

A local anesthetic will be given. A sheet of latex called the "rubber dam" (we also have latex free options) will be placed around the tooth to isolate it, keeping it clean and dry during treatment. The treatment consists of three or four basic steps, but the number of visits will depend on your particular case. Some treatments take two visits but some are just a single visit. Occasionally, three or more appointments are needed. We will make an access through the top of the tooth, locate each canal, remove infected and inflamed tissue, clean the inside with an ultra-cleaning system called the GentleWave Procedure, and permanently seal and fill each canal. When each of these steps is complete, we will fill the access opening with a new build up of the tooth and in many cases you will need to return to your General Dentist for a new crown to preserve the stability and health of your tooth.

Apicoectomy
Typically, A root canal can be treated in two easy steps, but each case is unique. The most common treatment option is Conventional Non-Surgical Endodontic Therapy (the root canal). The Apicoectomy (endodontic surgery) and other procedures are supplemental to conventional treatment options.

In extreme cases when a cavity compromises the structure of the tooth to the point that it is unrecoverable and too weak to repair or when a severe fracture extends below the gum line, extraction may be the only viable option, but in most other cases it is more beneficial, both cosmetically and medically, to save the natural tooth. Saving the natural tooth provides a host of benefits. The natural tooth provides more stability and is ultimately preferable to prosthetic ("man-made") options available and keeps your smile true to you. With the natural tooth comes a natural efficiency in chewing and the natural tooth maintains the force with which you can bite down on your foods, allowing you to continue to eat what you love. The natural tooth also provides natural bone stimulation, sensory proprioception (your ability to sense position), and helps protect you from functional overload of the jaw and teeth. Dentistry has yet to produce a denture, bridge, or implant that looks, feels, and functions as well as a natural tooth. With the newest technology today, root canal treatment is much less invasive and more comfortable than ever before.

Dr. Christopherson has over 25 years in dentistry. He attended dental school at The University of The Pacific, in California, where he graduated at the top of his class. He practiced general dentistry for 3 years in the Air Force and spent 7+ years in Durango, Colorado in his own practice. Following his time as a general dentist, Dr. Christopherson attended Boston University's Post-Graduate Endodontic Residency for an additional two years of specialty training. Since then, he has built his practice with care and compassion as his priority in Mesa and has enjoyed spending time working near his family. He and his wife, Nancy, have been married for 30 years and have 6 children with 4 grandchildren and counting. Outside of the office, he enjoys hiking - particularly the adventurous Grand Canyon - makes a mean BBQ, and it is not uncommon to see him riding his bike to the office. He is active in church service and lives for his family, friends, and patients.
