I volunteer 20-30 hours per month at the Meriden Humane Society. It is a hard and thankless job normally. It is difficult to care for so many animals that have been cast off or forgotten. I hope that people who have given the MHS a low star rating understand that once an animal is adopted it is forever. The contract reads that the animal can be returned and /or taken back for any reason. The shelter is home to more than 90 cats at most times and 20 or more dogs. Not all of these animals are suitable for adoptions, some require specific care and environments. Many were abused and are fearful of other animals, men, children ...women etc. Please take time to fill out an application be as specific as possible, we want to match you to your pet not the other way around. We want an adoption to be forever and not just because it didn't work out or what ever the heart breaking excuse is. Believe me we have heard it all when it comes to dumping, returning or giving up animals.
Please understand we are all volunteer and we do not make money doing this thankless job that keeps the animals alive and cared for. Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated.

You are totally wrong about Marlene, the director of the Meriden Humane Society. She is very compassionate in the way she cares about all these beautiful creatures. I have spoken with her and found that she is anything but rude. She gives 110 % to working with the society. You should take time to talk to her and you'll find that her love of animals is tremendous.
She needs to be vigilant about who comes into the shelter to adopt a pet. You cannot just let anyone adopt for any reason.
My kudos to Marlene for doing and caring for all her "kids."
