        Dr. Matthew D. Kangas hails from the state of Michigan, where he grew up in the suburbs outside of Detroit. Dr. Kangas earned his bachelor of science degrees in electrical engineering and mathematics at the University of Detroit Mercy, graduating summa cum laude. While pursuing his undergraduate degrees, Dr. Kangas served as treasurer of Eta Kappa Nu (electrical engineering honor society) and president of Tau Beta Pi (engineering honor society). Upon graduation, he worked as an environmental durability project engineer before pursuing medical school. In 2007, he began medical school at Michigan State University, where his spark for pain medicine was born. He continued his medical training in 2011 at the University of Michigan, where he completed a residency in anesthesiology. He remained at the University of Michigan to complete an Interventional Pain Medicine Fellowship in 2016. Dr. Kangas trained at an institution that emphasizes multimodal pain management. He was educated under the direction of anesthesiologists, neurosurgeons, physiatrists, radiologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, addiction medicine specialists, and social workers. He is an ardent believer that the optimal treatment of pain extends beyond just medications and injections. The most effective treatment includes therapies which target both body and mind. In this way, pain improvement is linked with optimization of functionality and improved quality of life. Outside of medicine, Dr. Kangas enjoys spending time with his beautiful wife, daughter, and son. He is an avid fisherman, golfer, bowler, and biker.

        Dr. Kangas is the best doctor that I have ever had to help me with my back. He truly cares about his patients and wants to help them regain their independence and mobility. If you work hard and try, he will work two times harder to help you. Make an appointment with Dr. Kangas, you will be glad that you did it!

        Excellent Physician!

        Today was my first visit with Dr. Kangas. He was an engaged listener and explained my diagnosis in a way that I could understand. This is the first time in years of searching for answers that a physician had a "game plan" developed by the end of our session and Dr. Kangas addressed all my concerns in a holistic approach! He is an excellent physician!!

        Excellent pain medicine practice!

        I began my experience here with an appointment with Dr. Matt Kangas. He is a “straight shooter.” He answered all of my questions about prior treatment and medication, and based on my responses, formulated a plan for the future.
        Furthermore, he did not hurry me out of the office as some medical providers tend to do.
        My subsequent experience with my nurse practitioner there has also been more than satisfactory. She too responds to all of my inquiries in a timely and professional manner.

        Pain management needs met

        Dr. Kangas is comparable to Dr. Schnapp as far as knowledge of attacking pain. He’s comfortable with taking the time to explain his thoughts for my pain situation and makes sure that I understand what his intentions are and that I’m comfortable with them. He’s very personable which gives me a safe feeling when he’s treating me.
