A relative of mine recently was sent to Morningview from the hospital after quadruple by-pass and heart valve surgery. Unfortunately, he entered on Christmas Eve, and being low staffed during the holidays, by New Years Day, he had taken on 30 lbs of fluid & was in congestive heart failure as he was rushed back to the hospital. Could the under-staffing explain why he was allowed to deteriorate so far before someone noticed?
After leaving the hospital, he had to be returned there because a higher care facility was full. A week after his return to Morningview, he was rushed back to the hospital due to dehydration. I'm sure the staff provided a pitcher of cold water at least twice a day and food. But what happens if a patient is too weak or medicated to get a drink for themselves, or eat? Does the staff help them with water or food? I wonder if he became dehydrated due to this?
Just wanted to raise awareness of these issues that often plague nursing home care. If you can monitor your loved one's care & situation, it is never a bad idea.
