Sciatic pain can very often be relieved through a treatment combination that includes chiropractic care, stretching, and deep tissue massage (trigger point therapy) of the piriformis muscle. When the piriformis muscles are identified as the main culprits and pain is chronic, a trigger point injection may be needed, whereby a small amount of anesthetic is injected directly into the muscle to break the cycle of spasms, although this is not commonly required.

Chiropractic Adjustments
Chiropractic care works by first relieving the tension or inflammation affecting the delicate nerves of the spine. This irritation to spinal nerves is the chief cause of spinal pain. When chiropractic adjustments are given to relieve the pressure placed on the nerves of the spine, relief can come almost instantly. And with chiropractic care, patients not only respond to spine pain conditions, but also to conditions affecting the entire body as well.
Subluxation
Most times, neck and upper back pain is the result of not just one factor. Injury may be combined with poor posture, subluxations (misaligned spinal vertebrae), mental stress, or disc problems.
Manipulation Therapy
Chiropractic adjustments have been shown in many research studies to be very effective at treating tension headaches, especially those that stem from the neck. A 2001 report by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that chiropractic manipulation provided almost immediate improvement, with far fewer side effects and more long-lasting relief than prescription medications. Another study found that just four weeks of chiropractic treatment was enough to provide a sustained benefit that far outweighed anything delivered by pain medication.

Myofascial Therapy
During both pre and post-delivery it is very important to understand that you are much more susceptible to injury. Your body is releasing the hormone Relaxin, which promotes loosening of your ligaments (in the pelvis and throughout the body) both before and after delivery, and the entire time you are breast feeding. Because of this fact your activities and treatment must be adjusted so that you do not injure yourself or aggravate a painful lower back condition (most common condition we see with pregnant or post-delivery patients). We have extensive experience working with pregnant women and use extensive soft-tissue protocols (myofascial release), gentle mobilization/manipulation, and exercises to promote a pain free pregnancy.

Disc Herniation Treatment
Arm pain from a cervical herniated disc is one of the more common cervical spine conditions treated by spine specialists. It usually develops in the 30 – 50 year old age group. Although a herniated disk may originate from some sort of trauma or injury to the cervical spine, the symptoms commonly start spontaneously. The arm pain from a cervical herniated disc results because the herniated disc material “pinches” or presses on a cervical nerve, causing pain to radiate along the nerve pathway down the arm. Along with the pain, numbness and tingling can be present down the arm and into the fingertips. Muscle weakness may also be present. The two most common levels in the cervical spine to herniate are the C5 – C6 level (cervical 5 and cervical 6) and the C6 -C7 level. The next most common is the C4 – C5 level, and rarely the C7 – T1 level may herniate. The nerve that is affected by the disc herniation is the one exiting the spine at that level, so at the C5 – C6 level it is the C6 nerve root that is affected.
