General Info: Founded in 1979, National Alliance on Mental Illness is one of the leading social welfare organizations in the United States. The organization provides support services to individuals with mental illnesses and their families. It also offers mental health care services through programs based on advocacy, education and research. The organization s affiliates operate in more than 1,100 local communities throughout the U.S. National Alliance on Mental Illness also maintains a library that houses books, tapes, videos and periodicals for its members. In addition, the organization provides literary speakers to clubs and civic and church groups. It offers information on medical professionals who accept Medicaid and Medicare insurance plans. National Alliance on Mental Illness additionally provides information related to social events, rehabilitation opportunities, housing options and day care programs. The organization operates NAMI Greater Orlando, which was founded in 1985 and serves Orange and Seminole counties in Florida.
