During his time with Heckenbach Suazo LLP and now, Heckenbach Law PC, Dave has continued to practice primarily in highly complicated divorce matters for individuals of high net worth and income. He has handled hundreds of contested hearings in cases such as divorce, paternity, allocation of parental responsibilities, child support modification, child support enforcement, maintenance modification, stepparent rights, and grandparents’ rights.

Ian’s current practice consists primarily of family law, including pre-trial, trial, and appellate advocacy. In addition to litigation of financial issues and parenting rights, this practice includes litigation regarding the enforcement of orders, including prosecuting and defending actions for contempt of court and execution proceedings via actions under C.R.C.P. 70 and garnishment actions. This practice has included litigation in the Juvenile Court in paternity, grandparent’s rights, and adoption matters, in the Probate Court in guardianship matters, and in the County Courts concerning protection orders. Ian has helped stepparents adopt stepchildren, including resolving contested relinquishment issues. Ian also advises clients regarding prenuptial agreements, including reviewing agreements presented to drafting agreements appropriate for divorce and estate planning purposes.

James will continue to practice primarily in probate litigation, including contested common law marriage claims, will contests, elective share claims, breach of fiduciary duty, adjudication of intestacy, equitable adoption claims, contested and contested and non-contested guardianship, and conservatorship. James will also offer estate planning strategies and succession planning for individuals, married couples, and small family-owned businesses.
In addition to continuing criminal defense, Nicole also chose to expand to Family Law once arriving in Colorado to continue the fight for her clients’ rights, with the best interests of every child at the forefront of her approach to litigation.

Dave began prosecuting misdemeanors and major traffic offenses in County Court. He was promoted less than a year later to the Juvenile Court and prosecuted felonies and misdemeanors against juveniles. Again, in less than a year, he was elevated to practice in the District Court, where he prosecuted adult felonies from First Degree Murder to Forgery and everything in between. In 1983, Dave was promoted to Chief Deputy District Attorney for the Denver District Attorney’s office, one of the youngest in its history.
Throughout his legal career, James has worked at all different types and size firms, including at Blank Rome, LLP as lead counsel during the foreclosure crisis in Florida. James ended his practice in Florida with a boutique real estate law firm where he gained valuable experience as a commercial litigator and in complex real estate and probate matters. In addition, James provided estate planning strategies for individuals, married couples, and small family-owned businesses.

Travis joined Heckenbach Law PC in September 2022. His practice focuses on family law, commercial litigation, and construction defect law. Travis is well versed in high conflict litigation, and he has extensive experience preparing complex cases for trial in state and federal court. Prior to joining Heckenbach Law PC, Travis was a trial attorney at Burg Simpson Eldredge Hersh & Jardine, PC, where he represented clients in a wide range of complex business and commercial litigation matters. Travis began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Henry J. Bemporad of the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas
In October of 1992, Dave joined Christopher C. Cross as a partner in the firm of Cross and Heckenbach, PC. During the five years Cross and Heckenbach, P.C. existed, Dave began handling complicated divorce matters, security litigation, criminal matters, attorney disciplinary matters, and some personal injury matters. Upon his partner’s elevation to the bench in 1997, Dave became a founding partner in one of the preceding entities to Heckenbach Suazo LLP. First known as Gutterman Carlton Heckenbach, LLP, the name changes evolved to reflect Dave Heckenbach, Jim Thompson, and Mychael Dave as the primary partners in the same entity that began on August 1, 1997.

James left R&H and joined Heckenbach Law P.C. as a Senior Associate, primarily handling all probate and trust matters, probate litigation, estate planning, guardianship and conservatorship matters, and Medicaid Planning for the firm.
David went to school at CU, CSU and Regis Universities. He has a degree in Fine Art and has shown at galleries and local venues. David has been a teacher, an artist, a restaurant manager, an interior stager, and a childcare director. He got his start in the legal profession as an administrative assistant and worked his way up to paralegal. David’s specialty is Estate Planning, which he feels truly helps people and their futures. He has been with Heckenbach Law PC since early in 2021 and feels that he has found the "perfect law firm."

He began his practice in probate litigation, guardianship/conservatorship, Trust Administration, Medicaid planning, and estate planning in the Denver area. After working at a large firm, James decided to transition into a solo practice to focus on specific clients and their estate planning and probate needs.
