Ophthalmology
Dr. Hawkins grew up in South Carolina and graduated from West Florence high School, having lettered in tennis for three years. He attended Furman University in Greenville, SC, and graduated cum laude with a BS degree in Biology. Medical training was done at the Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine in Charleston, where he was very active in the leadership for Medical Campus Outreach and the Christian Medical and Dental Society. Dr. Hawkins was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society in his junior year, and he graduated in the top 5% of his class. After completing his internship in medicine at MUSC, he completed his surgical residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Oklahoma.
Macular Degeneration

Cataracts

Cataract Surgery
The eye surgeons of Davidson Eye Associates have performed thousands of cataract procedures and made an immeasurable difference in patients’ lives. The cataract procedure available at our practice is vastly different from the cataract surgery of decades ago. Now, the procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis and only requires about two to three hours out of the day. The surgery itself only lasts about 15 minutes and patients can resume normal activities the next day. We’ve actually had patients who underwent no-stitch cataract surgery and then went golfing the day after the procedure!
Eye Exam
When making an appointment by telephone, please state the exact nature of your visit so that an appropriate amount of time can be scheduled. If you are having a complete eye examination, please allow one and a half to two hours for your visit and make arrangements for someone to drive you home, as your pupils will be dilated when you leave our office. We ask that all children under the age of 18 be accompanied by a parent or guardian to each visit.

Internal Medicine
Dr. Slyman took his pre-medical education at the University of Pittsburgh. At the same time, he majored in Chinese Languages and Literature, and minored in Russian, Chemistry, and East Asian Political Science. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and had a perfect 4.0 in his major, receiving departmental honors. He is a graduate of Bowman Gray School of Medicine where he received his M.D.degree, and he did his internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
