Prior to treatment dental x-rays and in some cases a CT scan is done to determine the quality and quantity of the bone in the area and the best location for your dental implant. Bone grafting or adding bone to the area where the tooth has been lost is sometimes required to increase the long-term prognosis for the implant. Where single implants are being used side-by-side, it is important to make sure there is adequate room in between them so the implant crowns can be fabricated correctly.

Over the last couple of decades, dental implants have revolutionized modern dentistry and are now considered to be ‘standard of care’ in the replacement of missing, or soon- to- be missing teeth. A dental implant serves the same function as your natural tooth root and is surgically placed just under the gums, integrating with the bone in the jaw. It is then ‘restored’ or brought to function by the placement of a crown.
Bridges
With an alternative treatment such as a dental bridge, the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth site would need to be cut down, shaped and subsequently crowned to support the bridge. Additionally, when a tooth is missing, the brain tells the bone cells they are no longer needed to hold a tooth so that in time the jawbone shrinks and an unsightly gap may develop underneath the replacement tooth or pontic on a bridge. This area can also be a challenge to clean and therefore, increasing the risk of decay on the adjacent teeth. Bridges have an average life-expectancy of 10-15 years. Therefore, depending on the patient’s age, a bridge may need to be replaced more than once in a lifetime.
