Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common, painful condition that can be treated non-surgically and surgically. A severe case can affect your ability to perform everyday activities. Repetitive stress on the wrist can cause compression on the median nerve as it becomes trapped against a ligament and causes your symptoms. Carpal tunnel may also be caused by trauma, tumor, gout, pregnancy, diabetes mellitus and rheumatoid arthritis.
Medical Weight Loss
Many patients see Dr. Ozeran for breasts that are sagging and have lost volume from excessive weight loss or post-pregnancy. Some patients have enough breast volume and require only a breast lift, or mastopexy. Patients who have lost a significant amount of breast volume often do best with a breast lift and an implant. Dr. Ozeran often sees older patients with basilar arthritis of the thumb, including severe pain that is greatest at the base of the thumb. Often this radiates into the palm. Sometimes the pain is so severe that it's difficult to hold a pen. Fortunately, most patients respond to nonsurgical treatments such as glucosamine-chondroitin sulfate or non-steroidal pain medications. Some patients require a steroid injection or splinting to keep the thumb joint immobilized. In severe cases, surgery with a tendon graft or joint replacement is necessary to eliminate the pain. Physical Therapy
Treatments for Dupuytren's contracture vary from needling to break up or puncture the hard tissue that is causing the bent finger(s) to enzyme injections to soften or weaken the cords in the palm. In severe cases, surgery may be required to remove the hard tissue completely for a longer-lasting result. Most patients who undergo surgery also need physical therapy afterward to restore strength and function.
Occupational Therapy
Like so many other conditions, the severity will dictate the type of treatment. Conservative treatments include taking non steroidal anti-inflammatories such as aspirin, ibuprofen or other over-the-counter pain relievers. A splint can immobilize and support the elbow during healing, and physical or occupational therapy can help strengthen the tern dons and ligaments of the hand and elbow. Severe cases may require surgery to release the entrapped nerve.
