Medical Weight Loss
Systemic health issues can also affect glaucoma. Even a regular exercise program and weight loss have been shown to decrease eye pressure! The 3 general categories of glaucoma therapy are medicines, in-office laser procedures and operating-room surgery.
Primary Care
There are four typical treatments for this condition. The first level of treatment undertaken is in coordination with your primary care doctor: blood glucose (sugar) control is improved, blood pressure is well controlled, a healthy diet is followed, and regular exercise is undertaken. The second treatment is laser therapy. This can both decrease the leakage from the damaged blood vessels, and can help to prevent the growth of new weak blood vessels. Injections of medicines can also be given to decrease the amount of fluid leaking from the blood vessels. The last treatment undertaken is a surgery called a vitrectomy. During this procedure, the gel that fills the back part of the eye is removed along with any blood that has leaked into this gel.

Glaucoma
Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in America. Approximately 4 million Americans have glaucoma, but only about 1/2 are aware that they have the disease. This is most likely due to the fact that glaucoma is commonly asymptomatic in the early stages, which is why glaucoma is known as the “silent thief” of sight.
Ophthalmology
At Lake Travis Eye and Laser Center, we strive to provide comprehensive, primary eye care for the whole family. Preventative and routine eye exams are important to maintaining good eye health. Often, eye and vision problems do not have obvious symptoms or signs, but are easily diagnosed by a licensed ophthalmologist. By diagnosing eye and vision conditions early on, our ophthalmologist is able to provide treatment options and, in many cases, restore vision or prevent vision loss. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends yearly or bi-yearly eye and vision exams, depending on whether you are at-risk or not.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a disease of the macula, an area of the retina located at the back of the eye that is responsible for fine detail vision. This area of the eye controls our ability to read, drive a car, distinguish colors or faces, and perform close-up work. Generally, vision loss is gradual and affects both eyes at different rates.
Laser Eye Surgery
The Visian ICL is an implantable contact lens that is an alternative to LASIK or PRK laser surgery. The lens is FDA approved with an extensive safety history for nearsightedness, and is expected to be approved for astigmatism very soon. The lens sits behind the iris, and in front of your native lens.
Cataracts
Cataract formation usually takes decades to develop. The best way to avoid or slow cataract formation is to eat a diet rich in antioxidants (green leafy vegetables), protect your eyes against UV light, and avoid trauma and steroid use if possible.
Cataract Surgery
Astigmatism is caused by the cornea being more curved in one direction than the other, like a football. Usually, the cornea is more rounded, like a basketball. Astigmatism can cause an image to be out of focus even after cataract surgery. Cataract surgery provides an opportunity to also “correct” the astigmatism at the same time. There are 3 possible options when dealing with both cataracts and astigmatism...

If there are any concerns regarding a child’s visual function, it is important to obtain a thorough comprehensive pediatric eye examination. We will evaluate the visual system to determine if any interventions are necessary. The earlier we are able to detect and treat the issue, the better the prognosis and result.

Dr. Kyle Rhodes founded Lake Travis Eye and Laser Center in order to bring state-of-the-art general eyecare and surgery to the West Austin area. As you will see during your visit, the clinic is extremely efficient and hassle-free. Dr. Rhodes graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science with Highest Honors. His medical school training was at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Dr. Rhodes’ internal medicine internship and ophthalmology training were completed at the prestigious California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, California, where he served as Chief Resident. He then returned to Texas for a glaucoma fellowship at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.

Smoking- The only environmental exposure clearly linked with macular degeneration is tobacco smoking. Not only does smoking increase the risk of developing AMD, but smokers also cannot take vitamin supplements that have beta carotene because the risk of lung cancer increases if they do so.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in adults in America. Approximately ¼ to 1/2 of current diabetics have some form of the disease. It is estimated that over 90% of diabetics may experience some form of eye changes over the course of their life. The risk of developing diabetic retinopathy is related to both age and to how long one has had the disease. Having diabetes does not mean that you will develop eye problems.

Ultrasound
In order to correct the vision, the natural cloudy lens must be removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This is done by numbing the eye with anesthetic drops and creating two very small incisions on the cornea. The lens sits inside a capsule, which remains intact except for a small opening created in order to access the lens. Using an ultrasound machine and/or laser, the natural lens is separated into small pieces and gently removed. The artificial IOL is then inserted into the capsule and positioned.

Blepharoplasty
If the issue is with pseudo ptosis/ dermatochalasis, the excess eyelid skin can be excised. This is called a blepharoplasty. If functional symptoms are noted on examination this would not be considered a cosmetic procedure and could be covered as a medically necessary procedure. The comprehensive examination will determine if it qualifies as a functional blepharoplasty. Good candidates for the procedure are healthy non-smokers, patients without serious eye conditions, and individuals with realistic expectations.
