Although many people consider calluses to be a simple skin problem, it is actually an indicator of bone problems. In the foot, calluses are typically seen on the heels, balls of the feet, and on the outer side of the big toe. Calluses have their own nerves and sacks of fluid that act as cushioning, which can cause pain over time.
Fungus
If you routinely find your toenails yellowed and deformed, fungi may be to blame. There is a type of fungus that thrives in dark, moist, and warm areas, much like your shoes, shower, locker room, etc. You may notice yellow and/or white spots on the nail, along with a thickness that develops over time. Hammertoes

I’ve been Dr. Hasting’s patient for over five years and the quality of service has been consistently good. Am there mainly for a toenail trim every 8-10 weeks but he also checks my feet and takes care of any pending issues that may become a problem, i.e. ingrown toenails. Barb, his receptionist, is very pleasant and schedules appointments carefully so that there is never a wait more than one or two minutes. The office is easy to find with parking at the front door. Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. Some symptoms include stabbing pain that usually occurs in the mornings. As you walk around on the foot the pain normally decreases, but it can return after standing for long periods of time.

Dr. Hastings grew up in Portland, Oregon. After completing his residency in 1997 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA, he established his practice in Lake Oswego in 1998. He is Board Qualified in foot surgery and is a staff podiatrist at Providence St. Vincent’s Medical Center for over 20 years. As a former marathon runner (and Ironman!) himself, his interests include sports medicine and treating athletic related injuries or setbacks. His hobbies include collecting sports and non-sports cards, hiking, and theater/plays.
