Primary Care
During your first visit, your provider will obtain a history of your condition, perform a physical examination and review any imaging studies or diagnostic studies you have had. He or she will discuss their findings in detail with you then make recommendations for treatment options. Following your appointment, a report that summarizes your provider’s findings along with recommendations for treatment of your condition will be sent to your referring physician and to your primary care physician.
Emergency Care
One of our neurosurgeons is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In the event of an emergency, before, during, or after office hours, please go to the nearest emergency room. The emergency room physician will evaluate you, then call one of our physicians if needed.

Epilepsy
Carter Gerard, MD, received his medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He completed his residency in neurological surgery at Rush University in Chicago. Gerard completed two fellowships in stereotactic, functional, and epilepsy neurosurgery, one under the instruction of Ryder Gwinn MD at Swedish Neuroscience Institute (Seattle) and the other with Prof. Steven Gill at Southmead Hospital-National Health Service(University of Bristol England). He is a board-certified neurosurgeon and a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons Section on Stereotactic and Functional Surgery(ASSFN) in addition to the AANS/CNS Section of Pain. Gerard’s clinical interests include deep brain stimulation, Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, microvascular decompression, trigeminal neuralgia, temporal lobectomy, vagal nerve stimulation, epilepsy, neuro-oncology, cervical myelopathy, hydrocephalus, and general neurosurgery.

You have been advised by one of your physicians that you should seek the opinion of a physician who specializes in neurosurgery and you have been referred to our office for neurosurgical consultation. When you first visit our office, please bring all x-rays, MRI scans, CT scans, and medical reports regarding your condition with you, or ask that the physician who referred you to our office send these images and reports to our office prior to your appointment.

Chemotherapy
Brain tumor resection removes part or all of a tumor with the goal of not damaging neurological functions. If complete resection cannot be completed, the tumor can recur and continue growing. Although there are risks involved with brain tumor resection, the dangers of an untreated tumor are worse. Resection may be followed by chemotherapy or radiation, especially if the tumor is not completely removed.
Radiation Therapy
Complete tumor resection is usually most effective in treating spinal tumors. Many spinal tumors are easy to remove because they do not form on the actual spinal cord. Others may be harder to remove because they cannot be distinguished from normal spinal tissue. Successful resection can relieve pain and significantly benefit the patient. These procedures may be followed by radiation therapy to ensure the complete removal of the tumor.

General Surgery
Dr. James Killeffer has practiced neurosurgery in Knoxville since 1997. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is a Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. He grew up in Knoxville and graduated from the University of Tennessee with Honors in 1987. He completed medical school at the University of Tennessee in Memphis, completed a general surgery internship at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine, and completed his neurosurgical residency at West Virginia University, where he joined their faculty as an Instructor in Neurosurgery. He returned to Knoxville to join his father in practice at University Neurosurgery, PC.
Pinched Nerve
A lumbar microdiscectomy is a minimally invasive procedure. A microscope is used to view the area through a small incision in the lower back to view the pinched nerve. Surgical instruments are then inserted through the incision to remove only the portion of the disc that is applying pressure on it, as well as any disc fragments that may have broken off.
Neurosurgery
Dr. Boyer earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center and completed his residency at the University of Missouri, Columbia Hospital and Clinics. As a member of professional organizations such as the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgery, Tennessee Medical Association, and American Medical Association, Dr. Boyer has given several lectures on presentations on different neurosurgery topics. He also recently served as president of the Tennessee Neurosurgical Society. Dr. Boyer has practiced neurosurgery in Knoxville since 1998.
