Teeth Cleaning
The first line of defense against gum disease is a unique type of cleaning called “scaling and root planing.” In this procedure, an ultrasonic cleaning device is used to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth where regular cleaning devices can't reach: under the gum line, on the tooth, and around the root. Then, the rough surface of the tooth and the root are smoothed out (planed). This provides a healthy, clean surface that makes it easier for the gum tissue to reattach to the tooth.

Crowns
If you have too much gum showing when you smile causing your teeth to look short, we call this a gummy smile. If your gum line is uneven causing some teeth to look shorter than others, we call this a crooked smile. Both situations are easily remedied with a procedure referred to as a gum lift or crown lengthening. During this procedure, we remove excess gum tissue and reshape the contour of your gums to lengthen the crowns of your teeth and provide a natural-looking gum line.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Stephanie is our fun-loving and gifted surgical chairside assistant. Stephanie graduated Tennessee Technology Center in 1998 and has a diverse background of experience in her twenty-four-year career, ranging from general dentistry, endodontists, oral surgery and now periodontal surgery.
Flap Surgery
During pocket reduction procedures (also known as “flap surgery”), we fold back the gum tissue and remove the bacteria hiding underneath, as well as the hardened plaque and tartar that have collected. We may also remove any tissue that is too damaged to survive. We then sew the healthy tissue back into place. Now that the tooth and root are free of bacteria, plaque, and tartar, and the pockets have been reduced, the gums can reattach to the teeth.
Maxillofacial Surgery
Andrea is the knowledgeable and beautiful smiling face you will have the pleasure of meeting during your first consult with Dr. Madigan. Andrea will guide you as you schedule your treatment, helping to answer your questions throughout the process. Andrea has over ten years of expertise working with the nuances of dental insurance plans. Originally from California, Andrea has experience in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, General Dentistry and Periodontics. She has never met an insurance dilemma that she could not solve! With her Hawaiian ancestry, Andrea has found an appreciation and love for the southern hospitality here in East Tennessee. This so closely aligns with her "Aloha Spirit" and wonderfully welcoming personality. When Andrea is not advocating for our patients, she can be found playing with her dog, Archer, or working on one of her art projects, like refurbishing unique pieces of furniture.
Tooth Extractions
I highly recommend Dr. Mike. As an extremely anxious patient, he made it a priority to make me comfortable during my procedure. His knowledge and experience in this field made me confident in his recommendation for some tooth extractions, bone grafting and dental implants to prepare for bridge work. Everything went perfectly and I couldn't be more happy with the results.
Ridge Augmentation
When a tooth is lost or is extracted, an indentation can appear in the gums and bone just above the spot where the tooth used to be. This occurs because the bone slowly atrophies or disappears in response to the empty space. In combination with replacing your missing tooth, we can provide ridge augmentation, a procedure in which we smooth out the indentation to recreate the original curvature and contour of your gums and bone. This procedure generally includes bone grafting to restore the missing bone, and in some cases must be performed prior to the placement of implants to ensure that sufficient bone is available to securely retain the implant.

Teeth Whitening
I am terrified of all things related to dental care and teeth. I experienced a lot of gum loss/recession after I had second degree burns in my mouth (from a teeth whitening session) become infected. I've been putting this procedure off because I hadn't met anyone yet that I felt like I could trust. Dr. Madigan and his staff are the absolute best. They've taken such great care of me.
Cosmetic Dentistry
When we think of cosmetic surgery, we tend to focus on the cheeks, eyes, and nose. However, as more people look to improve their appearance through surgery, cosmetic dentistry and periodontology are experiencing a rise in popularity. In fact, a poll conducted by the American Academy of Periodontology found that smile enhancement procedures outnumbered eyelid surgeries five to one.
General Dentistry
Dena graduated from Aristotle College in Indiana and became a certified dental assistant in 1992. She joined our staff in 2005 after working for several top-notch dental practices in Knoxville. Her knowledge and skill in periodontics and general dentistry are outstanding. Dena takes a genuine interest in our patients and treats them with respect and compassion. She very much admires the hard work and dedication of Dr. Madigan and the rest of our team.
