It’s been a long journey to become a neuroradiologist, and I wanted a job where I could be the best version of myself. We serve essentially all of ENC and then some – it’s an incredibly diverse population that has interesting pathology and that deserves the highest quality of care that comes with subspecialty focus. As Director of Education, I’ve been working with folks at the medical school to incorporate more imaging into the curriculum. My interests are well-aligned with the mission of ECU Brody SOM, and it is my opinion that Radiology is an integral part of primary care, so I am very excited to teach the physicians who will be serving this community in a few years. Working at Eastern Radiologists has given me an incredible opportunity to both serve the community’s clinical needs and practice as a clinician-educator, which is truly the best of both worlds.

Ultrasonography uses high frequency sound waves to aid in the diagnosis of numerous conditions and diseases. A device called a transducer is passed over the skin of the area to be examined, generating a series of images for analysis. Ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation, has no known harmful effects, and provides a clear picture of soft tissues that can remain ambiguous on X-rays.

Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear Medicine is an imaging technique that utilizes small amounts of radioactive materials. These materials are introduced into the body through injection, inhalation or by swallowing. Highly trained radiologists use advanced equipment to study how certain organs are functioning and to diagnose diseasesâ€”potentially in their earliest stages.
Mammography
Mammography is the only screening method proven to reduce cancer deaths. This simple exam uses low-dose X-rays to evaluate breast tissue, often detecting cancer long before a lump can be felt. And with one in eight women facing a breast cancer diagnosis, early detection is essential to positive outcomes. We strongly recommend annual screening mammograms beginning at age 40.
Computed Tomography
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) generates detailed, multi-dimensional images of the breastâ€™s soft tissue. These images are produced within a powerful magnetic field that surrounds you as you lie in an MRI machine. By using radiofrequency waves, MRI can often facilitate the diagnosis of disorders or diseases within the body that are not clearly detectable by X-rays or CT scans.
Chemotherapy
Curative treatments are intended to eliminate all cancer cells from the body. In certain patients, surgery and ablation can be curative. Unfortunately, most patients have cancer that is too advanced for curative treatment. In these patients, palliative treatments such as embolization, ablation and chemotherapy can slow cancer progression, improve quality of life by decreasing pain and other unpleasant symptoms, as well as potentially prolong life.
Radiation Therapy
Yes. Interventional radiologists work closely with medical, radiation and surgical oncologists as part of a multidisciplinary team. Interventional oncology procedures can be performed before or after surgery (including transplant), before or after radiation therapy, and before, after or concurrently with chemotherapy. Some procedures may require temporary changes in chemotherapy.
Interventional Radiology
Vertebral body compression fractures cause significant pain and disability. They occur when the bones in your spine, called vertebrae, get so weak that they fracture and collapse, whether from a true event or a simple motion. In many cases, vertebral augmentation, commonly known as kyphoplasty, can improve quality of life. Our vascular and interventional radiologists have extensive experience in the treatment of vertebral body fractures through this minimally invasive procedure. MR arthrograms help physicians evaluate alterations in structure and function of a joint and help to determine the possible need for treatment, including arthroscopy, open surgery or joint replacement.

Hysterectomy
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive procedure to treat fibroidsâ€”the most common noncancerous uterine tumors. While fibroids do not always cause symptoms, their size and location can lead to pelvic pain and heavy bleeding. Until recently, hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) was the only treatment for fibroids. Today UFE is largely successful in shrinking fibroids and, thus, treating fibroid pain.

Lesions
Vertebral augmentation, or kyphoplasty, is a minimally invasive treatment that can repair spinal fractures caused by osteoporosis, cancer or benign lesions. Spinal fractures can result from something dramatic like a fall, or from simple movements like coughing, sneezing or turning in bed. Interventional radiologists use orthopedic balloons to lift the fractured bone and return it to its correct position and medical cement to stabilize the fracture.
