Ophthalmologists

Glaucoma
Glaucoma typically causes a slow progressive loss of vision. There are no symptoms until significant vision loss has occurred therefore screening exams and early detection of disease are extremely important to prevent permanent vision loss. When screening for glaucoma your ophthalmologist will carefully examine your eyes to evaluate your optic nerve for excessive cupping. The cup of the optic nerve is an area of depression in the center of the nerve. Cup size can vary among individuals, but, as a general rule, cupping under 50% of the diameter of the nerve is considered to be normal. If the cup is estimated to be larger than 50% this can sometimes indicate glaucoma damage to the optic nerve. In addition, your ophthalmologist will order a special imaging test of the optic nerve which can measure the thickness of these nerve fibers as they enter the optic nerve. Areas of thinning on this test can indicate glaucoma damage. This test is called an OCT and will be performed regularly for screening and monitoring of glaucoma.
Ophthalmology
Following military service, Dr. Hageman completed his ophthalmology training at the Storm Eye Institute, Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Dr. Hageman has participated in several clinical research projects, which have been presented at national ophthalmology meetings. Dr. Hageman was also the recipient of the Storm Eye Institute Program Director’s Award, which is given to the resident physician who best displays the behaviors and attitudes each of us looks for in our own personal physician.
Macular Degeneration
In non-exudative AMD or the dry form of macular degeneration, debris called drusen accumulate in the deep layers of the retina causing parts of the macula to function poorly and eventually degenerate, leading to slow progressive central vision loss.

Cataract Surgery
A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s naturally clear lens. Your eye becomes like a window that is frosted or yellowed. Cataracts are a common cause of vision loss, especially as we age, but they are treatable. The only definitive treatment of cataracts is surgery to remove the eye’s cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial clear lens. Cataract surgery can only be performed by an ophthalmologist (Eye M.D.). There are many artificial lens options for people undergoing cataract surgery, some of which provide the chance for significantly less dependence on glasses after cataract surgery. Eye Exam

Diabetic Retinopathy
Non-Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy or NPDR is the earliest form of diabetic retinopathy. NPDR occurs when small vessels called capillaries are damaged by elevated blood glucose over time. Damage to these small vessels creates areas of weakness in the wall of the vessels leading to hemorrhaging inside the retina called intraretinal hemorrhages and formation of small outpouchings in the vessel wall called microaneurysms. Intraretinal hemorrhages and microaneurysms are the hallmark of NPDR.

Ultrasound
When you see an ophthalmologist for an evaluation of a retinal condition your eyes will be dilated with special dilating eye drops to improve the view to the back of the eye. The ophthalmologist will use a diagnostic microscope called a slit lamp and special lenses to view the retina. The peripheral retina may be examined with a head mounted ophthalmoscope called an indirect ophthalmoscope. Various diagnostic test may be performed which may include ultrasound of the eye, photographs, optical coherence tomography (OCT) or fluorescein angiography of the retina.
MRI
The most important treatment for diabetic eye disease is prevention. Tight control of blood sugar and blood pressure are the keys to reducing your risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. If diabetic retinopathy is found at your screening exam we may recommend special testing to evaluate the extent of the disease with a test called an OCT which is able to provide a microscopic type view of the retina similar to the way a CT or MRI scan images your other body parts. A special dye study called fluorescein angiography may also be obtained to evaluate the health of the blood vessels in the back of the eye. If diabetic retinopathy is significantly affecting vision, treatment with laser, eye injections or surgery may be necessary to improve vision or at least prevent or slow further vision loss.
