“By the time I met Hannah, she had normal X-rays and normal MRI reports, had tried a back brace, and had completed a physical therapy course,” Curtis said. “While all musculoskeletal pain is not always picked up on imaging, usually it will respond to the treatment she tried in addition to rest from the activity. But none of these interventions helped Hannah.”

Minimally Invasive Surgery
After reviewing his case, Mutha felt confident that undergoing a gastric peroral endoscopic myotomy (G-POEM) procedure could solve most, if not all, of Dallas’ symptoms. A G-POEM is a minimally invasive surgery that loosens the ring of muscle controlling the flow of stomach contents to the small intestine, allowing for food to pass through more freely.

Ashton Mansour, MD, orthopedic hand surgeon with UT Physicians and assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, was on call and came to the hospital early the next morning to see Tanner. He discovered a severe firework injury with significant soft tissue loss, bone damage, nerve/tendon/artery damage, loss of skin, severe burns, and a grossly contaminated wound.

A volunteer medic and registered nurse on-site performed CPR and utilized a nearby automated external defibrillator to return his heartbeat and stabilize the situation. After that, he was rushed to Memorial Hermann – Texas Medical Center for further care. It was there he met Viacheslav Bobovnikov, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon with UT Physicians and assistant professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.

Physicians gave Mickey botulinum toxin (i.e., Botox) injections in his legs as well as baclofen muscle relaxers to calm the spasticity throughout his body. He then began virtual and in-person therapy sessions to develop more strength and coordination.
