Glaucoma
The Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty (ALT) is a laser procedure used to treat primary open-angle glaucoma. In primary open-angle glaucoma, fluid in the eye causes eye pressure to slowly rise, and this elevation in pressure can cause strain on the optic nerve. Too much strain can eventually damage the nerve, and if left untreated this damage has the potential to lead to blindness.
Ophthalmology
Northwest Eye Associates was founded in 1979 by Dr. James A. Smelley. Dr. Smelley is a Houston native who attended Rice University where he played football. He then moved on to the Ophthalmology program at UTHSC-Houston. Once he graduated, he opened the practice and built it from the ground up until he was joined by Dr. Dora E Cantu. Dr. Cantu is a native Texan who attended the University of Texas at Austin which catapulted her to attend the ophthalmology program at UTHSC-Houston. In 1994, Joseph Block M.D. sold his 30-year-old practice to Dr. Cantu. She kept both practices alive by working in both offices until she decided to combine the two in 2004. Dr. Smelley retired the same year that the offices combined and moved to our current location just behind the Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital.

At Northwest Eye Associates, we pride ourselves in using state of the art technology to accurately diagnose and treat our patients. With the Cirrus Photo 800, we are able to quickly and precisely photograph and analyze images of the eye. The data collected from the photos allows us to confirm and provide in depth insight to our diagnoses of conditions such as: glaucoma, clinically significant macular edema, macular degeneration, retinal detachments macular drusen.
Laser Eye Surgery
There are a variety of conditions that may call for eye surgery; from cosmetic changes to vision-saving procedures. Each treatment comes with its own benefits, risks, and indications for use. From corrective treatments to orbital implants, today’s advancements can tackle almost any condition and provide a successful solution. Now, several modern approaches to corrective eye surgery range from laser reshaping of the eye's surface in procedures such as LASIK and PRK to surgical insertion of artificial lenses to correct eyesight.
Cataracts
A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens in the eye that causes blurred vision. Most cataracts are associated with aging and is the most common cause of vision loss in people over the age of 40 and the leading cause of blindness in the world. A cataract can occur in either or both eyes and cannot spread from one eye to the other.
Cataract Surgery
The Yag Posterior Capsulotomy (Yag Cap) is a laser procedure used to treat opacification of the posterior capsule after undergoing cataract surgery. In some cases, the capsule surrounding the intraocular lens implantation begins to form a haze, leading to cloudy or blurry vision, or the appearance of glare at night time.
Eye Exam
Dilated eye exam -- Drops are placed in your eyes to dilate, or widen, the pupils. Using a special magnifying lens, your doctor can examine your retina and optic nerve for signs of damage and other eye problems. After the exam, your close-up vision may remain blurred for several hours.

Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is the medical procedure that treats dermatochalasis. Dermatochalasis is a medical condition in which there is excess skin in the upper and lower eyelid.

State-of-the-art technologies at Northwest Eye Associates, as well as the operating room, combined with extensive experience, allow Dr. Cantu to provide the best possible medical service to her patients
Blepharoplasty
Risks include include infection, bleeding, dry eyes, difficulty closing your eyes, scarring, injury to eye muscles, discoloration of skin, temporarily blurred vision, the need for a follow-up surgery, and the risks associated with surgery in general which includes reaction to anesthesia, blood clots, and cardiac and pulmonary complications.
