X-rays
A dental X-ray evaluation of your teeth and jaw is paramount to the retention of proper oral health. They are standard procedure, and every new dentist will request previous scans or ask to take new ones for their records. Many people have reasonable reservations about the impact of X-rays on our health, and may not readily agree to have them done. Here are some things we would like you to know about X-rays before your next visit.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer screening. Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, cheek tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.

Teeth Cleaning
After each visit, our instruments are put through an ultrasonic cleaning system and then placed in a large pressurized steam oven called an autoclave. This autoclave is monitored on a regular basis to ensure it is operating at its peak efficiency and effectiveness. The instruments are packaged in such a fashion that it ensures they are never touched before the actual set-up time in the treatment room. When the instruments are touched it is with gloved hands. The dental handpieces (drills) are handled and autoclaved in the same fashion as other instruments. We use many articles that are for only one use and are disposed of after the visit.
Fluoride Treatment
Simple Decay- Fluoride treatments and fillings are viable treatment options if the cavity is in its early stages. Your dentist will apply a solution to the decaying tooth to kill harmful bacteria and place a filling where the cavity was to seal the area to prevent further decay. This is a fairly simple and painless method for cavity removal, as well as the most common treatment option.
Dental Sealants
Dental sealant. It is the dental treatment that consists of plastic material that covers one or more teeth, for preventing of cavities and tooth decay. Dental sealants are applied in a dentist’s office.

Fillings
Amalgam fillings are very durable, easy to use, and inexpensive when compared to other materials. Since amalgam fillings can sustain very heavy chewing loads, they are usually used to restore molars. Some of the disadvantages of amalgam fillings are that the silver tone is not as natural looking, possible short-term sensitivity, and more tooth structure is removed to conform the filling.
Resin Composite
Bonding the front teeth typically requires one appointment. Dr. Simone may remove a very minor amount of tooth structure to maximize adhesion of the composite resin to the tooth. A tooth-conditioning agent may be applied to the prepared chipped, stained or worn teeth, which are repaired by the application of a composite resin-bonding material directly onto each tooth's surface. This less expensive procedure allows the dentist to restore or enhance your smile in a single visit.
Veneers
Veneers are very thin pieces of porcelain. They are custom-made by a professional dental ceramist, crafted for proper shape, form and color. They are bonded onto the front of teeth to create a beautiful and attractive smile.
Crowns
The "gummy smile" is one of the most overlooked conditions in dentistry. Patients usually accept this condition thinking they just have short teeth. The problem is not short teeth but, most often, too much gum tissue. The excess gum tissue covers the unexposed enamel resulting in a "gummy smile." Crown-lengthening exposes more of the natural tooth by reshaping or recontouring bone and gum tissue. Crown-lengthening procedures can also be used to correct a "gummy" smile, where teeth are covered with excess gum tissue.
Bridges
Dental bridges are highly durable and will last many years; however, they may need replacement or need to be re-cemented due to normal wear.
Dental Bonding
Bonding- If a small portion of your front tooth is chipped, your dentist may repair your tooth with dental bonding. To bond your tooth, your dentist will roughen up the edge of it with a gel, and then your dentist will apply a solution to bond the material. After bonding material is applied the tooth is shaped and then hardened with an ultraviolet light.

Serious Decay- If the cavity has progressed beyond the ability for a fluoride treatment to remove the bacteria, crowns, root canals and tooth extraction are a dentist’s next line of defense. Crowns are custom coverings for decaying teeth; typically made from porcelain, they work to strengthen your effected tooth once the bacteria has been removed. If the decay reaches the inner tooth, or pulp, your dentist will remove the pulp, medicate it to clear any infection and add a filling. Tooth extraction is a last resort option when the decayed tooth is beyond restoration. Your dentist may recommend a bridge or implant for the gap.

Orthodontics
Orthodontics. An orthodontist specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and correction of misaligned bites, and the neuromuscular and skeletal abnormalities of orofacial structures. You may visit an orthodontist to evaluate jaw alignment, straighten teeth, close gaps or improve speech. If you are referred to an orthodontist by your dentist, it is important to make a visit to better understand how you may improve your oral alignment as misalignment can lead to serious health concerns later on.

Ditching your retainer. If you’ve had braces, wear your retainer for as long as your orthodontist recommends. If you stop wearing your retainer regularly your perfect teeth will eventually start to shift, thus leaving you unhappy with your teeth all over again.

Teeth Whitening
There are literally hundreds of over-the-counter whitening treatments available in the marketplace, including whitening strips and bleaching toothpastes. Many of the products are ineffective and may not produce the desired results.
