“I was drawn to gastroenterology through a desire to help patients, engage in academic pursuit and have a career that would enable me to pursue these interests while interacting with various disciplines in medicine, surgery and nutrition. “The field of gastroenterology offers cutting-edge procedures, office-based practice to diagnose and treat a variety of clinical conditions and also an opportunity to pursue research studies. “Shared decision-making is a key component of my patient centered practice. I engage the patient in a process in which the patient and I work together to make decisions and select tests, treatments and care plans. This teamwork is based on clinical evidence that balances risks and expected outcomes with patient preference and values. Patients once engaged in shared decision-making will learn about their clinical conditions and will be informed of their treatment options. The patients will be educated on benefits and harms of these treatment modalities. The patients will be given education tools to help them guide to evaluate each option and better prepared to discuss care with me their health care provider. “When I engage patients in shared decision-making, it improves their trust and satisfaction with the care I provide them. This process builds a foundation for a long-lasting and satisfying relationship between the patient and me. “I am an active physician member of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. I organize annual patient education seminars to benefit patients and family members with Crohn’s and colitis living in Iowa. “I am actively involved in teaching and research studies with the medical trainees who rotate through our gastroenterology service.”
