Ankle deformities may be the result of injury, a congenital birth defect, degenerative changes brought on by age, or they can result from neuromuscular conditions and diseases like diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.
Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia testing: Â Fibromyalgia can be confused with other illnesses including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome, and Lyme disease, so these and other disorders need to be ruled out. Imaging tests and nerve and muscle studies may help with this diagnosis.
Plantar Fasciitis
If you suffer from plantar fasciitis, a foot problem characterized by inflammation of the plantar fascia (the tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes), you know the discomfort the condition can cause. The condition causes pain under the heel bone and foot arch, especially after prolonged walking or standing. When conventional treatments are ineffective at minimizing symptoms and healing the plantar fascia, extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) can be an excellent solution.

Physical podiatric examinations and x-rays can help determine the cause of problems with feet, ankles, and lower legs. Sometimes however, these tools cannot give a clear glimpse of the issues. When these initial diagnostic tools cannot diagnose the condition, an ultrasound is used to help a doctor evaluate pain, swelling, infection, and other symptoms.
MRI
Physical examinations and X-rays are great diagnostic tools, but in some cases, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is needed to better diagnose pain, discomfort, or swelling in your feet, ankles, and lower legs. Unlike conventional X-rays or CAT scans, MRI scans do not use radiation, which makes this a valuable tool for patients who cannot undergo radiation-related tests. Also, MRIs are better at detecting soft-tissue conditions than X-rays.

If you are experiencing foot or ankle pain and your podiatrist cannot determine the cause through a physical examination, you may need a computerized axial tomography scan or CAT scan. (This test is also called a computer tomography or CT scan.)

Arthroscopy
Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure used to visualize and treat problems inside the ankle joint. The term arthroscopy literally translates to â€œlooking within the joint.â€ During an arthroscopy procedure, fiber optic cameras and small surgical tools are used to explore the ankle joint and remove debris. The procedure can help treat ankle pain and confirm a diagnosis of damage to bones, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments.
Ankle Surgery
Serious ankle deformities can interfere with daily activities, and can make it difficult to enjoy outdoor activities or maintain employment. When conservative methods of treatment fail to relieve ankle pain, ankle surgery is the only solution.
Bunion Surgery
There are countless variations of bunion surgery. In general, bunion surgery involves the removal or realignment of soft tissue and bone near the toe joint. If the joint is severely deformed, it can be stabilized with wires, stitches, screws, or plates.
Joint Replacement
The procedure recommended by your physician will depend on the type of arthritis you have, the location of the arthritis, and the progression of the disease. Three surgical procedures are designed to treat arthritis of the foot and ankle: arthroscopic debridement, joint fusion, and joint replacement.
Metatarsal Surgery
The surgery involves re-setting the metatarsal bone, pinning the bone in place, and allowing the surgical site to heal. Once the foot heals from metatarsal surgery, patients typically experience relief from pain and improved foot functionality.
Cyst Removal
Ganglion cyst removal, or ganglionectomy, is a procedure designed to permanently remove a cyst from the foot. During the procedure, the cyst is separated from surrounding tissue and removed with the fluid sac intact. An alternative to surgical removal of ganglion cysts is drainage of the cyst with a needle or syringe.

Neurosurgery
Nerve surgery is performed to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with a neuroma. In most cases, these procedures are considered only if other treatments have been unable to provide sufficient relief of the symptoms.
Toe Surgery
Toe ailments cause pain and can be disabling. With the proper surgical procedure, your doctor can correct the condition and relieve symptoms. Toe surgery may involve removing or smoothing bones, repositioning ligaments and tendons, removing nerve tissue, or reducing pressure on a compressed nerve.
Achilles Surgery
Achilles surgery is the treatment of choice for athletes and anyone with a high level of physical activity. The goal of the surgery is to reattach the torn Achilles tendon to its normal position. The procedure requires a small incision in the back of the leg near the ankle. The surgeon identifies the torn ends of the tendon and stitches them back together to repair the tendon.
Heel Surgery
Generally speaking, ESWT is recommended for individuals with plantar fasciitis whose symptoms have become unmanageable. It is also recommended when conventional plantar fasciitis treatments (i.e. anti-inflammatory medications, heat and cold treatments, shoe inserts, and physical therapy) have been ineffective. In addition, many patients choose ESWT as a less-invasive alternative to heel surgery.
Arthroscopy
Bone spurs: Bone spurs can develop in the front of the ankle joint, causing restricted mobility of the ankle and foot. With arthroscopy, surgeons can shave down the bone spur to increase movement of the joint.
Ingrown Toenails
Warm water soaks several times a day, properly fitted shoes and socks, and trimming nails in a straight line (rather than rounded) are ways to treat and prevent painful ingrown toenails. If there is an infection, antibiotics may be prescribed.

Hammertoe Surgery
Hammertoe surgery corrects a foot deformity in which the first joint on one or more of the four small toes is bent. During surgery, the first joint of the toe is straightened to correct the deformity and relieve the symptoms commonly associated with hammertoe including pain and inflammation.

Corns
A corn is a small, rough mound of thick, hardened skin. Corns can develop wherever skin rubs together. They usually occur at pressure points on the foot, such as the top of the toe â€œknuckleâ€ or in between toes.
Cyst
Ulcer
Corns can eventually bore down into the skin and press on underlying nerves, causing extreme pain. At a certain point, the body begins to treat corns as a foreign object and an ulcer can develop. Ulcers present a serious complication for those with diabetes and poor circulation.
Calluses
Properly fit shoes will also reduce the occurrence of blisters, calluses, and other problems caused by your shoe rubbing against your foot.
Fungus
Athleteâ€™s foot is a common fungal infection that develops on the feet, usually between the toes. Most cases of athleteâ€™s foot can be treated at home with over-the-counter antifungal medication. However, fungal infections are stubborn and often recur over time. To completely eliminate athleteâ€™s foot, it is necessary to change the environment that is allowing the fungus to grow, and eliminate the infection with antifungal medication.

Achilles Tendonitis
Achilles tendinitis is caused by overuse of the band of tissues that connects the lower region of your calf muscle to your heel bone, also known as your Achilles tendon. Those at a higher risk for Achilles tendinitis are runners engaging in intense training or middle-aged people who participate in sports on occasion.
Ankle Instability
Chronic ankle instability is usually caused by repeated ankle sprains and is described as the gradual giving way of the outside of the ankle. Some symptoms of ankle instability include constant inflammation or swelling, tenderness, and instability in the ankle. After a sprained ankle, the ligaments become stretched and torn. Proper rehabilitation is required to strengthen the muscles around the ankle and rehabilitate the tissues within the ankle that affect your balance. In addition, physical therapy, medications, and bracing can help treat chronic ankle instability. Failure to do so may result in repeated ankle sprains, or possibly surgery.

Cartilage damage: Cartilage damage is common in people who have suffered an injury to the ankle joint (like a sprained ankle). If left untreated, cartilage damage can eventually lead to arthritis of the ankle joint.
Bunions Problems
For the most part, bunions require no medical treatment. However, if you are experiencing one or more of the following, a podiatrist can help alleviate your symptoms.
Calluses
Metatarsal surgery is an outpatient procedure performed while the patient is anesthetized (usually via intravenous sedation or general anesthesia). After the patient is completely anesthetized, the surgeon begins the procedure by incising into the skin just behind the toe, thereby accessing the metatarsal bone. He then incises the bone, places it in its proper position, and pins it in place with a metal pin or screw. Finally, he stitches the incision. (The doctor may also remove any foot calluses and correct any other problems if necessary.)

Daily preventative care can help you decrease your risk of developing these other serious conditions like ulcers and infections. Inspecting your feet at the end of the day to look for any abnormalities, maintaining proper hygiene, keeping your feet warm in cold weather, encouraging blood flow in the feet, and maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle can discourage other conditions from developing.

Fungus Toenails
Fungal infections in the toe or fingernails can appear as thickened, discolored, or disfigured. While it may seem like the condition is just an aesthetic concern, fungal infections can lead to worsened symptoms and pain. Diabetes, a weakened immune system, and the normal aging process are all causes associated with fungal infections. It is more likely for senior citizens and adults to develop a fungal infection as opposed to children.

As we age, foot problems are almost inevitable and completely normal. However, there are important steps to take to make sure you stay on your feet.
Hammertoes
Hammertoe is a deformity where one or both joints of the second, third, fourth or fifth toes begin to bend outside of their normal alignment. Pressure can begin to weigh heavy on the toes as you wear shoes which is where pain and other symptoms develop.
Heel Spurs
Heel spurs occur in at least 50% of people who have plantar fasciitis. Past treatments for heel spurs, a bony growth that begins on the front of your heel bone and points toward the arch of your foot, included surgery to remove the growth. Nowadays, surgery is rarely a treatment option and more plans for physical therapy, ice, and pain medications are used to treat heel spurs.

Metatarsalgia
Pediatric Foot Care
Pediatric foot conditions often go unnoticed and are often misdiagnosed. Most doctors dismiss any pediatric foot issues as being a part of normal structural development that children will eventually outgrow. However, foot problems are often prevalent in children due to their high levels of physical activity. Children are resilient, meaning that any potential foot issues may be overlooked.
Plantar Fasciitis
These may be used to minimize pain affecting the ankle, heel, top-of-foot, ball-of-foot, Achilles tendon, arch (plantar fasciitis), or other areas of the lower legs and feet. This includes pain caused by arthritis, diabetes, and other conditions.
Podiatric Deformities
To remove corns, your physician may begin by recommending a change in footwear. To reduce pain, protective padding can be used to cushion the corn and give it time to heal. Your doctor can remove a corn in a single office visit by using a small knife to trim down the corn. Part of your treatment plan may also include surgery to correct foot deformities that might cause corns to continue developing.
