Unfortunately, thousands of otherwise law abiding Maryland citizens are charged with DUI and DWI each year. ?Driving while under the influence, or DUI, can be proven by a breath test result of.08 or more or by evidence showing that the driver?s normal coordination has been substantially impaired due to drinking alcohol. ?Driving while impaired (known as DWI), which is different than driving while under the influence, can be proven by evidence showing that the driver?s normal coordination was impaired to some extent (a lesser extent than DUI), as a result of consumption of alcohol. ?This offense can also be proven by a test of.07 or more, but less than.08. The maximum penalty for a DWI is 60 days in jail for and a $500 fine for a first offense. A DUI conviction carries 12 points on your MVA record and a DWI conviction carries 8 points on your MVA record. ?12 points can lead to revocation, and 8 points can lead to suspension.

Traffic Violations
A traffic ticket in Baltimore, MD, can be a more serious issue than you initially expected. Many drivers in Maryland make the mistake of thinking that if they are issued speeding tickets or cited for other traffic violations that lead to ticketing, paying the fine resolves the issue. Unfortunately, the reality is that some police officers make mistakes when they issue tickets. Public Intoxication is a misdemeanor and the maximum penalty is a $100 fine and or 90 days in jail.

First Degree Murder: First-degree murder involves a pre-planned intentional killing. First-degree murder is a felony and the maximum penalty is life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Homicide
Negligent Homicide by Automobile: Negligent homicide involves carelessly driving a car while impaired by alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two and killing another person as a result of the careless driving. Negligent homicide is a felony and the maximum penalty is $5000 and or 3 years in prison.
Arson
Felony-Murder: Felony-murder occurs when a person commits a felony, other than murder, and kills another person during the commission of that felony. Felonies that constitute felony murder include, rape, arson, carjacking, burglary, and kidnapping. For example, if an individual is committing arson and someone dies in the fire resulting from that arson, the arsonist is guilty of felony murder. Felony murder is considered first-degree murder. Felony Murder is a felony and the maximum penalty is life in prison without possibility of parole.

Voluntary Manslaughter: Manslaughter can be either voluntary or involuntary. Voluntary manslaughter is an intentional killing that is decreased from either first or second-degree murder because the court finds that the killer was adequately provoked. This is often referred to as a heat of passion murder. The most common example of voluntary manslaughter is when an individual walks in on a cheating spouse engaged in sexual activity with another person and the individual kills one or both of them immediately. Voluntary manslaughter is a felony and the maximum penalty is $500 and/or 10 years in jail.

Premises Liability
Premises liability. If you suffered a slip and fall on someone else’s property, the property owner is liable for all resulting damages. Different rules apply, however, if you suffered a slip and fall on any type of public property.
Property Damage
State law requires all drivers to carry auto insurance, and this insurance must provide various types of coverage. At a minimum, an auto insurance policy must provide at least $30,000 in bodily injury liability coverage, at least $60,000 in total accident liability coverage, and at least $15,000 in property damage liability coverage. These coverage amounts could be sufficient for compensating the victim of a minor car accident, but many of these incidents result in damages that quickly eclipse at-fault drivers’ insurance coverage.

Personal Injury
A “personal injury” is any event caused by one party that results in harm to another party. Under Maryland law, the injured victim can hold the at-fault party accountable for their losses through a personal injury claim. This is a type of civil suit that seeks compensation for financial damages and the intangible losses resulting from the at-fault party’s negligence.
