correction.... this is a great company

DISREGARD my previous review. It was a knee-jerk reaction that was unwarranted. With the upcoming move and with things starting to happen at such a fast pace, my anxiety level led to my being inconsiderate of Kevin in particular and Focal Point in general. The 'problems' are minor, easily resolved. Call it a misunderstanding on my part entirely. I remain embarrassed.

Anti-consumer treatment

This business is contracted by A-M Homes in The Heritage Place subdivision in DeLand Florida.I spent many visits discussing with Kevin the plants I was familiar with and how I wanted to use these or similar plants as upgrades to the standard installation as provided with the purchase of the new home. Some adjustments were made along the way to make the pricing within the range I could afford. I was pleased as a hungry dude at a Thanksgiving feast. When I visited the home, my new next door neighbors, Jim and Jan, whom I had not previous met greeted with, You must be the new owner. Yes, sir, I replied, all cheery and pleased. Although I had already made notice of the situation, Jim pointed out that one of the trees in the front yard (an east Palatka Holly I had selected) was toppled over on the ground. Since my new home was locked, and had no immediate access until the on-site builder’s agent was available, Jim and Jan showed me their home, quite exquisitely built three years ago (2009) by a custom builder that vacated the subdivision. Their home price is almost twice that of my home, even considering the many upgrades I chose. Once I had the key to my home, yet to be closed for a month, I viewed the inside and pleased with the work done. Checking the outside, in the back there was a row of evergreen plants in front of the red fountain grass. I had not chosen any evergreen plants, the diagram and sales sheet shows westringia. In the front, grouped around an Arizona Cypress (which I had specifically chosen), were westringia plants (which was correct since I had selected the same plants in the front and back). These plants were placed about a foot in front of the Cypress. From experience in my current home, yet to be sold, these plants were placed much too close to the Cypress. Within a year, each would grow into each other. Kevin showed no concern or interest in verifying the installation. When I contacted Focal Point, Kevin was defensive of the work done BY THE SUBCONTRACTOR THEY USE. He had not seen the finished product. He proved himself of questionable character by immediately defending the subcontractor because they had used the company for many years. Kevin said trees are not staked/anchored…. And the end result is that trees can be easily uprooted with heavy winds, many of which are experienced in east, central Florida. He further said that we had discussed the use of evergreens with me… a blatant lie… I do not like evergreen plants and trees. I hung up on Kevin. As a consumer it was his first duty to offer supportive words and not be defensive for something he had not even offered to review. Kevin designs but does not oversee the installation of plants. I ended up telling him that I ‘am satisfied’ and will say as much to the builder during the walk-thru. I requested they bill me for the remaining amount due, which they sure did el pronto. The pricing sheet and diagram do not show anywhere that any type of evergreen bush was agreed upon. I will check out the installation of plants again during my next visit but it appears I have also been short-changed on the installation of some plants. I am done with the anti-consumer employee Kevin and Focal Point Nursery in general. Once I make the move to Deland (November 5) I will display a sign in the rear window of my truck:BAD EXPERIENCE WITH FOCAL POINT NURSERY. I have yet to discuss with A-M Homes my full concerns. That will be done prior to closing. I will not be totally satisfied (and the sign will remain) until Kevin in fired. Companies have no place in talking down to ANY customer when that customer shows displeasure.

Not Your Average Garden Center

I've lived in lots of places in Florida and I love to garden so I've been to lots of garden centers but this garden and supply center takes the cake. I love it. I went in there for some annuals and came out with gifts from their unique gift shop too. Their plants are just gorgeous.
