During cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is removed with a technique called phacoemulsification. This process uses a small instrument that emits high-frequency ultrasound to break-up and gently remove the cataract material. Once the cataract is completely removed, it is replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens implant (IOL). The entire surgery is completed in just 15 to 30 minutes and when it’s over, most patients can almost immediately see an improvement in their vision.
