Normally, the labia minora—the “inner lips” surrounding the entrance to the vagina—are protected by the labia majora. (The labia majora are the hair-covered flaps of skin on the vulva.) Sometimes, the labia minora extend beyond the labia majora. This condition can be caused by aging or genetic factors, but more commonly, it occurs after vaginal childbirth. During childbirth, the labia minora must stretch to many times their original size in order to accommodate the passage of an infant. Sometimes, they become damaged in the process and cannot return to their original size and shape.

Ultrasound
During ultrasonically assisted lipectomy, a wand-like instrument administers ultrasound energy to fatty deposits, liquefying them. The liquefied fat is then removed through a cannula. UAL is considered less invasive than conventional liposuction and may result in a shorter healing period. Additionally, the ultrasound energy used during UAL has been shown to tighten the skin in treated areas. Therefore, this procedure is considered ideal for patients who are struggling with skin laxity as well as stubborn fat deposits.

Unlike saline implants, gel implants may cause a “silent rupture,” with no noticeable change in the breast’s appearance is noticeable. For this reason, the FDA strongly recommends women with gel implants receive long-term follow-up care, and encourages them to undergo diagnostic testing such as magnetic resonance imaging 5-6 years postoperatively, then every 2-3 years thereafter to assess the gel implant’s integrity.
Chemotherapy
For most patients, BIA-ALCL can be successfully treated with surgery to remove the implant and scar tissue surrounding it. In severe cases, however, patients may require chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.
Radiation Therapy

Dr. Aflaki completed two years of Plastic Surgery research at the Laboratory of Tissue Repair and Gene Transfer at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He then did an internship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, followed by a full General Surgery residency at the Mount Sinai St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City. He is board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery and board certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery. Subsequently, he completed a Plastic Surgery fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital before joining the Plastic Surgery Services of Fredericksburg.

Note that those with smooth surface breast implants (who make up the majority of those with breast augmentation) are not impacted by this recent recall.
