Flap Surgery
Osseous surgery is a last-resort effort to strengthen the area around a tooth in order to preserve the tooth. This surgery, also known as flap surgery, is typically performed when the socket around a tooth or several teeth has failed to respond to other treatments. The purpose of the treatment is to create a strong environment around a tooth. It is generally used only when other treatments have been performed and the pocket health has continue to deteriorate.
Gum Surgery
Laser gum surgery, or the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP), is a gum disease treatment that allows the dentists at Fort Worth Dental to eliminate your gum disease with less pain and less downtime. LANAP uses the PerioLase MVP-7 and is the only FDA cleared laser protocol for gum disease treatment. Laser gum disease treatment offers numerous long-term advantages for patients and is performed using laser technology. There are no scalpels or sutures needed for this procedure.
Osseous Surgery
In preparation for the procedure, the affected area will receive a local anesthetic in order to numb it. Next, the dentist will make an incision in the gum tissue around the area that needs to be cleaned and treated. The tooth and underlying bone is revealed by gently lifting the gum away. The area surrounding the tooth is then cleaned of any plaque and tartar build up. Once the cleaning is done, the dentist will clean the surface of the bone. Any bacteria that are trapped around the tooth will slowly eat away at the bone and make it uneven. If the area is to heal properly, the bone must have these rough, uneven surfaces smoothed. After the cleaning and smoothing, the dentist will trim the gum tissue to fit to the new underlying structure. He will then stitch the gum tissue snugly back in place.
Tooth Extractions
Ridge preservation is a type of bone grafting process that rebuilds and strengthens the bone. It is usually necessary when a tooth extraction has left behind an empty socket that has become weakened. The empty socket can cause the soft tissue and bone in the jaw to collapse. If the bone loss is allowed to develop, it can make some treatments like implants impossible and it can force other treatments that may be more expensive, more painful, and more time consuming.
Ridge Augmentation
Typically, the bone in the jaw will begin to deteriorate after a tooth removal. Because the tooth is no longer there to provide support, the socket will begin to shrink. It can eventually become simply an indentation instead of a socket. Ridge augmentation is a procedure which can restore the natural shape of the gums.
Bone Grafting
Bone grafting material is found in several places. It is common and preferred to retrieve the bone grafting material from the patient's own mouth. When that source is not possible, the dentist may pursue a few other options. He may get freeze-dried human bone from a tissue bank. It is also possible to get processed bone tissue from animals. In some cases, a dentist may use a bone substitute that has been developed from mineral sources. Whenever bone tissue is obtained from sources other than the patient's own mouth, there are procedures and safeguards similar to those used for a blood bank. Many safety procedures and safeguards are used to protect the safety of the patient.
