Overall

This is from my friend Jessica, who gave me permission to share. She lives in Arkansas.

"I am in SHOCK. I just heard from my daughter and her friend who both attend Darby Jr.High, that during the beginning of the year assembly, the girls were warned that if they happen to start their period in the middle of class and are not sufficiently prepared with both a means to deal with it and a change of clothes if necessary, that they will be ushered to SDC and forced to sit in front of other students, instead of the office where they should be in a private room, and not only forced to wait there until a parent or guardian can bring them the proper accouterments, but that they will be issued additional SDC days as PUNISHMENT. That's in-school suspension as a punishment for MENSTRUATING. This was announced to the entire female student body in a separate conference, but not included in the handbook policy. The handbook clearly states that they do not discriminate for any reason. Darby Junior High needs to be held accountable for what it is telling our young girls about a situation they have absolutely no control over. They will change this and issue a formal public apology to our girls and renounce any such threats, or I won't be the only one filing a lawsuit. Humiliating our young daughters and punishing them for not being prepared at all times for something that not even an adult woman is unable to accurately predict is completely unacceptable. I personally experienced my first menses at Darby Junior High and this was NOT the way I was treated. I was given the things I needed by my teacher (who kept a drawer specifically for such occasions) and allowed to go home. This is junior high, these things are going to happen! No young lady should be made to feel ashamed or punished for a completely normal and natural occurrence. Menstruation is not a crime!"
