Pediatric Care
Our pediatric hand specialists evaluate, diagnose and treat children nearly every day. We have established relationships with numerous therapists and orthotists in the area to work with children to provide them with pediatric specific care. They are specially trained in pediatrics and sensitive to the needs of a growing child. This is important because pediatric orthopedics is different than adult orthopedics.
Primary Care
When scheduling the appointment you will be asked for the current insurance information and it will be verified on the call. We must have a referral from your primary care doctor in our office in order to schedule the appointment.

Labor and Delivery
Brachial Plexus Palsy: A form of paralysis caused by trauma to the upper brachial plexus in the spinal cord, usually during childbirth.

Neurology
We have a dedicated neuromuscular clinic to allow our team to give your child the attention and treatment they deserve. This clinic allows us to prepare for your child’s visit by reviewing notes from your primary care provider and other specialists so that we are prepared to address your child’s unique needs. We are also working to bring in other providers that will often be needed to help your child live their best life such as physical & occupational therapy, prosthetics & orthotics (braces), wheelchair vendors, etc. We are also working towards providing a clinic with access to multiple physicians including Pediatric Orthopedics, Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Neurosurgery, and Pediatric Physiatry.

Ultrasound
Babies who are in a breech position during the last trimester have an increased stretch on the hips resulting in an increased risk of hip dysplasia. For this reason, routine screening for babies with breech presentation is recommended with an ultrasound of the hips around 6 weeks of age and an X-ray of the pelvis at 6 months of age.

Dr. F. Brett Shannon was the area’s first pediatric orthopedic surgeon arriving in Fort Myers in September 1992 after four years at Bethesda Naval Hospital as head of Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Shannon is board-certified and fellowship-trained in pediatric orthopedic surgery. He is married to Toni and they have three children.

Ashley C. Ringland, PA-C, is our highly respected, senior advanced provider and one of the staff members most often seen by our patients with fractures in need of casts and splints, and patients with sports injuries. Ashley also assists in surgeries each week. She has been with our practice since 2008. She is board certified with the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants and a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.
Physical Therapy
Our main goal in treating your child’s spinal condition is to help ease any discomfort and to prevent any progression of spinal abnormalities, particularly in a growing child. The treatment of the various spinal conditions can be complex and is determined by a multitude of factors including the underlying diagnosis, skeletal maturity and severity. In general however if identified early, treatment consists of observation or physical therapy. If identified in a more moderate condition, treatment options can include bracing. However, at certain points and based on the severity, surgery is indicated.
