Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
One of the more common procedures that Dr. John C. Kagan performs for patients in Southwest Florida is carpal tunnel surgery. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that arises from increased pressure on the median nerve of the wrist. Nine crucial tendons pass from the forearm to the hand in a space with the median nerve. This space is known as the carpal tunnel. If this area becomes swollen from inflammation or repetitive overuse it pressures the median nerve, which may lead to debilitating numbness, tingling sensations, and severe pain that can radiate throughout the hand and fingers usually involving the thumb, index finger, long finger, and half of the ring finger. Quite commonly it will awaken you from a sleeping state.

Ultrasound
With a vast amount of experience in this minimally invasive surgery, Dr. John C. Kagan will carefully examine your hand and determine if carpal tunnel surgery is right for you. In some cases, carpal tunnel surgery may not be necessary to alleviate the pain you are experiencing. Treating existing arthritis, splinting the wrist or even an ultrasound guided steroid injection may help reduce swelling and pain from the carpal tunnel area.
MRI
Diagnosis is made based on the symptoms and physical examination. A regular MRI scan may not show up a SLAP tear and therefore an MRI with a contrast dye injected into the shoulder, is ordered. The contrast dye helps to highlight SLAP tears.

Dr. John Kagan has more than 39 years of experience in Sports Medicine and Adult Reconstructive Surgery. He has extensive training in the latest, most cutting-edge surgical techniques for orthopedics, such as minimally invasive hip and knee surgery, computer assisted surgery, hip resurfacing, oxford uni compartmental knee resurfacing, and shoulder humeral head resurfacing. Dr. Kagan has had vast experience with arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder and routinely performs arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs, arthroscopic stabilization surgery, and arthroscopic ligament reconstruction surgery. He is also skilled and experienced in standard knee and shoulder arthroscopic techniques.
Arthroscopy
Shoulder arthroscopy is a surgical procedure in which an arthroscopic camera is inserted into the shoulder to inspect, diagnose, or repair problems inside a shoulder joint. As a patient the benefits of an arthroscopic shoulder surgery include smaller incisions, typically faster recovery, less post-operative pain, and less scarring.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
When pain persists or prevents you from normal routine activities, Dr. Kagan may advise to participate in an arthroscopic rotator cuff repair surgery. During this procedure, Dr. Kagan uses specially designed instruments to attach the rotator cuff muscle back to the bone. This minimally invasive surgery is performed with a few ¼ inch incisions around the shoulder using a small digital camera that is inserted into your shoulder to perform the surgery.

Dr. Kagan earned a full scholarship in 1970 to the University of Alabama, where he was the Jimmy Moore Memorial Scholar Athlete Recipient prior to attending medical school at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He completed a surgical internship at the University of Florida and an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Kagan returned to Fort Myers in December 1980 to begin private practice.
Arthroscopy
Arthroscopic surgery helps to provide for a more anatomic type of reconstruction for this ligament. The reconstruction choices for donor grafts are a cadaver graft, a person’s own hamstring tendons, or the bone tendon patella tendon. The procedure begins with an exam under anesthesia followed by a diagnostic arthroscopy. During the diagnostic portion of the arthroscopy, injuries to the meniscus and or articular cartilage can be handled with either repair or resection of the meniscus with possible transfer of articular cartilage from a non-weight bearing area to a damaged weight bearing area.

When medications or therapy are not enough or insufficient at controlling pain or improving mobility, total hip replacement surgery is often recommended to individuals whom are experiencing severe hip pain resulting from other hip issues or arthritis. Knee Replacement
A partial knee replacement or Unicompartment knee arthroplasty is a surgical procedure that resurfaces a single compartment of a damaged knee with metal and plastic components called prostheses. Often times known as a knee resurfacing, this procedure is performed less often than a total knee replacement due to the requirements that only one of the three knee compartments is damaged to the point of needing resurfacing and that the normal function of the ligaments (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL) is present.
