Overall

Dr. Hedberg diagnosed my allergies and gave me shots. I am off the shots for a year now. Under another allergist, I had never been able to get off my shots.

He has helped me with my sinuses and bronchitis very successfully.

We hear this question a lot and the answer is no. Autoimmune diseases, like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, occur when the immune system begins attacking normal body proteins. Autoimmune disease is managed by specialists called rheumatologists. Immune deficiency is when the body lacks the ability to fight off infections.

Allergists, like all doctors, complete 4 years of medical school following college graduation. Like all doctors, they complete an intensive residency training program following medical school graduation. Allergists complete either a residency in internal medicine (specialty care of adults) or pediatrics (specialty care of children). Some choose to do a combined residency in both fields. Unlike other doctors, however, allergists then go on to complete a 2, 3, or even 4 year fellowship program in allergy and immunology. These programs combine rigorous research in the field with intense training specifically in allergy and immunology. This prepares the allergist to diagnose and treat allergies of all kinds, diagnose and manage asthma, prepare and manage allergy shots, diagnose and manage complex immunodeficiencies, as well as many other conditions. No other type of doctor receives the same level of specialized training in these areas. Following completion of the fellowship program, allergists must take and pass a rigorous board examination to become board certified. To keep their skills up to date, allergists have to complete specified activities each year to maintain their certification and must periodically retake the board examination. Only allergists who have completed a fellowship, passed board examinations, and are current with maintaining their certification can call themselves “Board-Certified”.

Because of the nature of our practice, it is not often possible for us to work in emergent visits. We will do our best to see you for a timely follow up visit if you are having problems related to allergies, but your best bet is often to visit your primary care physician or an urgent care clinic for same-day issues. We do encourage you to call our clinic if you have questions about your condition and our staff will point you in the right direction.

Unfortunately, no. The structure and function of the immune system is based on specific genes in one’s DNA. As long as there are no inherited mutations in these genes, the immune system will function normally unless there is an extreme lack of proteins available to make the components of the immune system (as in severe malnutrition) or there is damage to immune cells caused by outside forces (chemotherapy, HIV, etc.). So all the claims that “taking this pill will boost your immune system” are completely unproven.

Dermatology
If you have rash that is not responsive to antihistamines (Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra, Benadryl), you may benefit from seeing dermatology prior to an allergy visit.

Allergies
It can be hard to tell, however, if you have persistent fever with mucous production that looks like pus, then this may be infection. If you have recurrent or persistent symptoms of itchy/watery eyes, itchy/runny nose, postnasal drip and congestion then you need allergy testing.
