Infectious Diseases
Many cancers can be prevented by not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, not drinking too much alcohol, eating plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grains, being vaccinated against certain infectious diseases, not eating too much red meat, and avoiding too much exposure to sunlight.

Bladder Cancer
Bladder cancer is a type of cancer that begins in your bladder. This organ is balloon-shaped and lies in your pelvic area. The function of the bladder is to store urine. Bladder cancer begins most often in the cells that line the inside of the bladder. Although it is not always clear what causes bladder cancer it has been linked to smoking, a parasitic infection, radiation and chemical exposure. It may occur at any age, but typically it affects older adults.

Prostate Cancer
Prostate Cancer forms in tissues of the prostate, which is a gland in the male reproductive system found below the bladder and in front of the rectum. Prostate cancer usually occurs in older men and grows slowly during the initial stages will not spread. Prostate cancer begins when cells become abnormal with mutations occurring. The accumulation of abnormal cells form a tumor that can grow to invade nearby tissue. Some abnormal cells can break off and spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body.
Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is when one or both lungs have the development of abnormal cells. Primary lung cancer starts in the lungs, where as secondary lung cancer is when cancer traveled from another part of the body to the lungs (metastasized).

Ultrasound
Screening has not proven to be effective in the early detection of uterine cancer. Pap smears sample the cervix but are inadequate for the uterus. Uterine biopsy is a less effective screening test in asymptomatic women and is uncomfortable. Other tests available for women at high risk include progesterone challenge test, transvaginal ultrasound, and dilatation and currettage. The progesterone challenge test involves giving progesterone for 10 days then checking for withdrawal bleeding. Women who have benign disease will bleed. The test has not been evaluated in women with known uterine cancer. Transvaginal ultrasound checks for increased uterine wall thickness. A thicker than normal lining should be evaluated further. Dilatation and curettage (“D & C”) is the gold standard of evaluation.
MRI
As experts in the use of the latest therapies, including image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) to treat cancer. In IGRT, repeated imaging scans such as CT, MRI, or PET are performed during treatment. These imaging scans are processed by computers to identify changes in a tumor’s size and location due to treatment and to allow the position of the patient or the planned radiation dose to be adjusted during treatment as needed. Repeated imaging can increase the accuracy of radiation treatment and may allow reductions in the planned volume of tissue to be treated, thereby decreasing the total radiation dose to normal tissue. IGRT is often used to treat breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, and head & neck cancer.
Radiology
The physicists at the Cancer Center at Gaithersburg are intimately involved in treatment planning, doing quality assurance on the equipment, maintaining the equipment to meet all state and federal regulations, checking patient charts on a weekly basis to assure appropriate treatments are being delivered. The physicists at the Cancer Center at Gaithersburg are board certified by the American Board of Radiology, Medical Physics and have over 20 years of experience.
Chemotherapy
The team at our cancer center knows that a colon cancer diagnosis can be very overwhelming. Often people find it embarrassing to talk about colorectal or colon cancer. If colon cancer is discovered early, it is highly treatable. Most colorectal cancers are contributed to lifestyle factors and increasing age, while only a small number of cases are caused by underlying genetic disorders. Other risk factors include diet, obesity, smoking, and not enough physical activity, as well as inflammatory bowel diseases. Even if it spreads into nearby lymph nodes, surgical treatment followed by chemotherapy can be highly successful. If it is a difficult case when the cancer has metastasized to the liver, lungs or other sites, treatment can prolong and add to one’s quality of life but not cure. Over 95% of colon and rectal cancers are adenocarcinomas.

She is actively involved in community outreach events as well as having appeared repeatedly on local and regional TV channels as an expert in the field of oncology.

Skin cancer has been on the rise, although most cases can be prevented with skin protection to UV exposure.
