Although we accept referrals for the endodontic treatment of permanent teeth in children, it is on a case management basis. We do not offer nitrous oxide or oral sedation for children. We suggest that before referring children, you have had an opportunity to establish a behavioral history for the child that includes more than examination and cleanings. Becoming familiar with anxious patients during an evaluation appointment is beneficial for both the patient and our staff and allows us to establish rapport to provide the highest quality of professional care in a less stressful environment at the subsequent treatment visit.

Dental Examination

Teeth Cleaning
Please inform our office if you have a medical condition that may be of concern prior to treatment (i.e., diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial heart valves and joints, rheumatic fever, etc.) or if you are on any medication (i.e., heart medications, aspirin, anticoagulant therapy, etc.) or require medication prior to dental cleanings (i.e., antibiotics for pre-medication.)

Avoid chewing on the affected side of your mouth until your general dentist covers your tooth with a permanent restoration or crown. Please follow your regular dental hygiene routine. A detailed report will be sent to your general dentist immediately following completion of the endodontic treatment. It is important for you to contact your general dentist as soon as possible so that he / she can begin placing the permanent restoration that needs to be placed on your tooth. The temporary filling that we place will last for a couple of weeks, not a couple of months.

Root Canal Treatment
In addition to dental school, endodontists receive two or more years of advanced education in this kind of treatment. They study root canal techniques and procedures in greater depth, for diagnosis and treatment of more difficult cases. For this reason, many dentists choose to refer their patients to endodontists.

Dentures
The only alternative to root canal treatment is extraction or removal of the tooth. Once the pulp is affected beyond its ability to heal, it will lead to either an inflammatory response or over time an infection. Neither is healthy, and both require some form of treatment. While some patients may prefer extraction because it is less expensive, in the long-term, it can be more costly. After an extraction, replacing the tooth with a bridge, implant, or removable partial denture is generally more expensive than root canal treatment and a crown. Our goal is for you to save your natural tooth for as long as possible.

Dental Implants
Nothing is better than your natural tooth. Maintaining your natural teeth is one of our main priorities, but if we feel that root canal treatment is not predictable, then a dental implant may be indicated. Implants appropriate for replacing missing teeth and we will recommend one if we believe that it is a better long-term investment in your health.

Oral Surgery
Sophie was born in Manila, Philippines. She earned a dental degree at Centro Escolar University, Manila. She subsequently migrated to London, England where she earned a post-graduate degree in Oral Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons at Lincoln Inn Fields. She met her husband of over twenty years while studying in London. They returned to the San Diego area in 1993 to join Sophie’s extended family. Sophie joined Escondido Endodontics in April 2005. She has over twenty years of experience working as a dental office manager. Sophie and her husband love to travel and spend time with their pug Popsy.
Tooth Extractions
Retaining an endodontically treated tooth in your mouth is a healthy alternative to tooth extraction. The tooth structure that remains in your mouth after treatment is not dead tissue. The principle tooth structure, known as dentin is an end product of cells known as odontoblasts and dentin is actually not a living tissue, even prior to root canal treatment. Other examples of tissues that are by-products of live cellular function that are supported in the body are fingernails and hair. Cutting those tissues produces neither bleeding or pain. The only part of a tooth that is vital, as defined by having blood circulation, is the pulp tissue. The tooth will function normally without the pulp tissue. It will, however, be insensitive to stimulation by hot and cold, for example. Once pulp tissue is removed from the tooth, the dentin can be cut without sensation.
