Our practice uses state-of-the-art, small volume cone-beam CT (computed tomography) technology that provides highly accurate, 3-D radiographic images for the diagnosis, planning, and treatment of endodontic disease. This allows three-dimensional visualization of teeth, bone, sinuses and surrounding structures with minimal radiation to the patient, enabling a level of anatomical accuracy and patient care not possible with 2-D technologies (regular dental x-rays). With the addition of cone-beam CT technology to our office, our practice is committed to providing innovative, high-quality, patient care.

Crowns
Your tooth is more prone to fracture immediately after endodontic treatment. You should chew on the other side until your restorative dentist has placed a core build-up and a protective restoration, usually a crown. If your tooth’s strength is seriously compromised, Dr. Packer or your restorative dentist may place a post and core build-up inside the tooth. Your restorative dentist and endodontist will determine the appropriate restoration to best protect your tooth.

Root Canal Treatment
Dr. Joseph L. Packer was raised in Utah and attended Brigham Young University for his Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science. Dr. Packer attended The University of Nevada Las Vegas for Dental School where he graduated Cum Laude and received his D.M.D. degree. After practicing for two years as a general dentist in Las Vegas, Dr. Packer attended Loma Linda University for a 27 month Endodontic Residency, graduating with a Certificate in Endodontics as well as a Masters of Science in Dentistry, M.S.D. degree. Dr. Packer maintains membership in the California Dental Association, the American Dental Association and the American Association of Endodontists. He has successfully passed the written exam component of the American Board of Endodontics with plans for board certification in the future. Dr. Packer is married and has five children.
Apicoectomy
Generally, a root canal is all that is needed to save teeth with injured pulp from extraction. Occasionally, this non-surgical procedure will not be sufficient to heal the tooth and your endodontist will recommend surgery. Apical surgery can be used to locate fractures or hidden canals that do not appear on x-rays but still manifest pain in the tooth. Damaged root surfaces or the surrounding bone may also be treated with this procedure. The most common surgery used to save damaged teeth is an apicoectomy or root-end resection.

Dentures
Never choose extraction because you think it will be quicker! Endodontic treatments generally require one to two visits lasting less than an hour each. An extraction requires one visit, but the denture, bridge or implant will require several additional visits with your dentist.

A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures performed, well over 14 million every year. This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need for dental implants or bridges. At the center of your tooth is the dental pulp. The pulp is a collection of blood vessels that helps to build the surrounding tooth. Infection of the pulp can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks, and chips, or repeated dental procedures. Symptoms of the infection can be identified as visible injury or swelling adjacent to the tooth, sensitivity to temperature or pain in the tooth and gums.

Never choose extraction because you think root canal treatment will be painful! Modern techniques and effective anesthesia make root canal treatment virtually painless. In fact, discomfort after the procedure is generally greater with a tooth extraction. Patients who have experienced root canal treatment are six times more likely to describe it as “painless” than patients who have not had a root canal.
