Arthritis Treatment
In people, the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) is called the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). This ligament is a fibrous band of tissue located deep within the knee joint. The CCL is one of the most important stabilizers of the canine knee joint. Tearing or rupturing of this ligament causes joint instability leading to joint swelling and severe pain. A rupture of the CCL is one of the most common reasons for sudden rear leg lameness in dogs, and less commonly in cats. Osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) will develop if this instability is not corrected.

SAH offers exclusive veterinary prescription diets from Royal Canin, Hills, and Purina. Our diets can help with a vast number of conditions such as allergies, diabetes, kidney disease, urinary disease and sensitive gastro-intestinal tracts. Our hospital is fully stocked but we always recommend calling ahead of time in case we need to special order a particular diet for your pet. Our staff is here to guide you through dietary decision-making for growth, maintenance, and senior life stages. We also offer a wide range of nutritional supplements as alternatives to NSAIDS and traditional pain medications. We welcome any questions you may have regarding prescription or even over the counter diets.

Dental Surgery
We recommend routine oral check-ups as well as prophylactic dental cleanings. In a dental cleaning we use ultrasonic equipment to remove plaque. We also polish the teeth and extract teeth if needed. We are fully equipped to perform oral surgery in more serious cases. Pets that undergo dental cleanings routinely go home on the same day.
Veterinary Surgery
Our facility offers diagnostic tests such as in-hospital blood testing, digital radiographs and on-site ultrasound. We are fully trained and equipped for emergencies and complete surgical care as necessary. We also offer the services of a board-certified veterinary surgeon for canine knee surgery.

Laboratory Services
Setauket Animal Hospital maintains a complete in-house laboratory. This allows us to perform a wide range of blood tests on-site such as a complete blood count, serum chemistry, urine analysis, stool tests, and ear and tissue cytology. The in-house laboratory helps us to diagnose emergencies and have results quickly. We also use a local outside laboratory for specialized diagnostics.
X-Ray
Dr. Brown is proud to announce the addition of our on-site digital x-ray equipment. Our digital x-ray technology provides high quality, detailed imaging in an instant. Our hospital maintains an ongoing relationship with board-certified radiologists as well as other specialists who can be available for additional consultation as needed.
Microchipping
SAH offers the HomeAgain Microchip. The microchip, which is the size of a grain of rice, is implanted between the shoulders and beneath your pet's skin. If your pet is missing, the microchip is a safe and effective way to help bring your pet home to you. The annual HomeAgain membership also includes free access to the ASPCA 24 hour emergency hotline for assistance with pet poisons or toxins.
