Weight loss is an enormous challenge. Not only is it difficult to lose weight, but it is even harder to maintain the weight loss. The large number of weight loss diets and weight loss programs is testimony to the difficulty of the problem. If one diet worked, that would be the end of the story.

America is in the midst of a weight crisis, leading to higher rates of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, gallstones, sleep disorders and arthritis. Overweight and obesity are defined using the body mass index (BMI). While this BMI number is an imperfect measure - body fat percentage may be better - it is used because it is easily available. The chart below indicates the definitions.

Electrocardiogram
A stress test, sometimes called a treadmill test or exercise test, helps a doctor find out how well your heart handles work. As your body works harder during the test, it requires more oxygen, so the heart must pump more blood. The test can show if the blood supply is reduced in the arteries that supply the heart. It also helps doctors know the kind and level of exercise that are appropriate for you. Heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, your electrocardiogram, and how you feel are monitored during the test.

The other class of medication that received FDA approval are glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA). They help the pancreas release the proper amount of insulin to keep blood sugar levels in check. They also make patients feel full longer, can lead to weight loss and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Liraglutide, semaglutide and dulaglutide are examples. These drugs should not be prescribed in patients with a family or personal history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 syndrome.

Ultrasound
Vascular ultrasound, also called a duplex study, is a noninvasive test. Sound waves are used to assess the flow in the carotid arteries that feed blood to the brain, the abdominal aorta that feeds the lower body, the renal arteries that feed the kidneys, and the arteries that feed the legs.
Radiology
While our practice uses an electronic record system, it may not interface with the laboratory you use or the system used by your other doctors. Your visit will be most productive if any relevant office notes, records, laboratory, and radiology tests results are available at the time of your visit. Prior surgery and angiogram reports are valuable. You may have those records faxed to us at 732-981-0413, but it is safest to bring paper copies with you that we will scan into your chart.
Nuclear Medicine
A nuclear medicine technologist will place an IV into a vein in your arm or hand and inject a small amount of the isotope. About 20 minutes after the injection, you will then have the first set of pictures taken under the camera. These are the "resting" images.
Computed Tomography
Over time, as the plaque builds up in the heart arteries, it becomes hardened and calcified. These calcified plaques can be visualized with a special type of CT scan. That test, which takes several minutes and does not involve the injection of dye, provides a calcium score. The score reflects the number of calcified plaques, their size, and their density. A normal score is zero. However by age 70, approximately 60% of women and 80% of men, will have a score above 0. It is important to note that a score of 0 does not mean there has not been any buildup of plaque, only that whatever plaque is present is not calcified enough to be detectable by a CT scan.
