Mental Health
Disproportionately large breasts can cause both physical and emotional distress for patients. Patients with macromastia may experience physical discomfort resulting from the weight of their breasts. The resulting pain can make it challenging for some patients to perform common physical activities. Along with the physical ailments of macromastia, some patients may suffer from emotional distress or more significant mental health problems as a result of their large breasts.

Ultrasound
Liposuction is a procedure that can help sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas, including the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. Liposuction results in permanent fat removal. During the past decade, liposuction, which is also known as “lipoplasty” or “suction lipectomy,” has benefited from several new refinements. Today, a number of new techniques, including ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty (UAL), the tumescent technique, and the super-wet technique, are helping to provide selected patients with more precise results and quicker recovery times. Although no type of liposuction is a substitute for dieting and exercise, liposuction can remove stubborn areas of fat that don’t respond to traditional weight-loss methods and result in significant fat reduction in stubborn areas.

Dr. Gunn attended medical school at the University of Tennessee at Memphis. Her general surgery training was completed at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan where she also completed a critical care fellowship. Dr. Gunn received her plastic surgery training at Duke University. She was on faculty at Duke University from July of 2000 through March of 2005 at which time she moved to the Gunn Plastic Surgery Center. Dr. Gunn is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery 2001, and is a member in good standing of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

The best candidates for liposuction are normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of excess fat in certain areas. You should be physically healthy, psychologically stable and realistic in your expectations. Your age is not a major consideration; however, older patients may have diminished skin elasticity and may not achieve the same results as a younger patient with tighter skin.

Breast Lift
Over the years, factors such as pregnancy, nursing, and the force of gravity take their toll on a woman’s breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. The candidate for the best facelift results is a man or woman whose face and neck have begun to sag, but whose skin still has some elasticity and whose bone structure is strong and well-defined. Most patients are in their forties to sixties, but facelifts can be done successfully on people in their seventies or eighties as well.

The best candidates for eyelid surgery are men and women who are physically healthy, psychologically stable, and realistic in their expectations. Most are 35 or older, but if droopy, baggy eyelids run in your family, you may decide to have eyelid surgery at a younger age.
Abdominoplasty
Abdominoplasty, known more commonly as a tummy tuck, is a major surgical procedure to remove excess skin and permanently remove fat from the middle and lower abdomen and to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. The procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen. But bear in mind, it does produce a permanent scar, which, depending on the extent of the original problem and the surgery required to correct it, can extend from hip to hip.
Body Lift
A panniculectomy procedure surgically removes the pannus, or the apron of excess skin and tissue from the lower abdomen. Differing from a tummy tuck, panniculectomy surgery does not tighten the abdominal muscles for a cosmetic reason. However, removing the excess fat will still make the abdominal area flatter. A panniculectomy can also be performed in conjunction with a tummy tuck or body lift procedures.
