Matthew L. Burman, M.D. of blessed memory (1944 – 2019) was an America Board of Ophthalmology certified Ophthalmologist who always enjoyed seeing his patients. He served the people of Detroit and its surrounding areas for over 40 years. Dr. Burman was a beloved husband, devoted father, loving grandfather and respected colleague. We will always be thankful for all he did for this practice, our patients and the field of Ophthalmology.
Macular Degeneration
Up until a couple of decades ago, difficulty seeing in the dark was considered just a normal part of “getting old.” However, after multiple clinical studies, we know difficulty adjusting to changes in illumination (impaired dark adaptation) is the first symptom of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Laser Eye Surgery
Custom LASIK surgery, also known as wavefront LASIK or wavefront-guided LASIK, uses 3-dimensional measurements of how your eye processes images to guide the laser in re-shaping the front part of the cornea.
Cataracts
The eye’s natural crystalline lens helps light enter the eye and assists with focusing – allowing us to see near and far. The clouding of this lens is called Cataracts. Made of water and protein, the lenses in our eyes arrange proteins in an exact pattern to keep the lens unobstructed and allow light in for clear vision. As our eyes get older, the protein can fall out of alignment and start to clump causing a cloud-like area in your field of vision. This condition is called Cataracts, and over time, it may grow larger and cloud more of the lens, making it harder to see.
Cataract Surgery
Having Cataracts does not mean a total loss of vision; many new procedures are available to help improve your vision. Cataract surgery is the most common type of microsurgery for this condition. With this procedure, the lens is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL); its results are quite successful providing most patients with 20/20 or 24/40 distance vision.
Eye Exam
Please note that a complete eye examination may take up to two hours. A trained ophthalmic tech will do a preliminary screening and take a complete health history. The examination will be done entirely by one of our board certified ophthalmologists who may recommend additional testing based on his/her findings. When you come to your appointment please remember to bring eye glasses or contact lenses if you wear them, a complete list of your current medications, the name of your physician who may have referred you to us so that we may send a prompt written report to maintain continuity of care, a driver’s license for identification purposes, all current insurance information and a referral form if applicable.

Lung Cancer
Then there are the side effects. It can cause the heart to beat faster and decrease blood pressure, which can reduce blood flow to an already compromised optic nerve. Smoking marijuana long-term may increase the risk of lung cancer. And one study showed that some people can build up a tolerance to marijuana’s eye pressure lowering effects. Until a new therapy can show it works to consistently lower eye pressure with fewer side effects than the standard treatment of eyedrops, laser surgery and sometimes incisional surgery, ophthalmologists continue to recommend patients stick with their prescribed therapy and come in for regular visits, so they can monitor their long-term care.

MRI
MRI or CT-scan also clearly demonstrate prolapsed orbital fat, but are indicated only when a diagnosis cannot be made based on clinical exam. With MRI or CT-Scan, subconjunctival orbital fat prolapse is continuous with the intraconal fat, unlike many other orbital lesions.

Dr. Megan J. Cowsill, DO is a member of the American Osteopathic Colleges of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, the Michigan Ophthalmological Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Osteopathic Associates and the Michigan Osteopathic Association. She received her doctorate in medicine from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Cowsill conducts eye exams and performs surgical procedures, treating patients for a variety of ophthalmic conditions including cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic eye disease.
