The Disease Control and Environmental Epidemiology Division works to track, control and prevent communicable diseases and related conditions in Colorado to reduce illnesses and premature deaths. The division works with a team of more than 180 staff members. It administers the Colorado Responds to Children with Special Needs Program, which characterizes the prevalence of birth defects and related disabilities and provides epidemiological information for research and intervention. The Disease Control and Environmental Epidemiology Division also assists with medical monitoring programs near contaminated sites. It conducts tuberculosis treatment and control activities. The division is a part of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, which is governed by the State of Colorado.
