The level of certification needed for both types of surgeons varies. Cosmetic surgeons can practice under a variety of medical practices such as dermatology or ophthalmology. According to the American Board of Cosmetic surgery, U.S. medical schools do not offer residency programs for cosmetic surgery specifically. A plastic surgeon, however, must be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery to practice plastic surgery and have undergone training and education that is exclusive to plastic surgery. In other words, a dermatologist can preform cosmetic surgery to the skin, but his or her knowledge and credentials will be based in respect to dermatology, whereas a plastic surgeon is officially certified to practice plastic surgery.
