Ophthalmology
Medical vs. Vision Insurance One of the most challenging billing issues in an ophthalmology office is whether we should be billing the medical or vision plan.
Macular Degeneration
Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the most common causes of poor vision after age 60. AMD is a deterioration or breakdown of the macula. The macula is a small area at the center of the retina in the back of the eye that allows us to see fine details clearly and perform activities such as reading and driving.
Laser Eye Surgery
Trouble seeing close objects, distant object or both are common vision problems, called refractive errors. They can almost always be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. In some cases laser, refractive surgery (Customvue Lasik, Lasik or PRK) may be used to correct your vision. This surgery changes the shape of the cornea. This reduces your need for glasses or contacts.
Cataracts
A cataract is a loss of transparency, or clouding, of the normally clear lens of the eye. As one ages, chemical changes occur in the lens that make it less transparent. The loss of transparency may be so mild vision is hardly affected or so severe that no shapes or movements are seen, only light and dark. When the lens gets cloudy enough to obstruct vision to any significant degree, it is called a cataract. Glasses or contact lenses cannot sharpen your vision if a cataract is present.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is a very successful operation. One and a half million people have this procedure every year and 95% have a successful result. As with any surgical procedure, complications can occur during or after surgery and some are severe enough to limit vision. But in most cases, vision, as well as quality of life, improves.
Eye Exam
What is Refraction? A refraction is the process of determining if there is a need for corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses. It is an essential part of an eye examination and necessary to write a prescription for glasses or contact lenses.

Diabetic retinopathy is a disease that leads to blurry, distorted vision and blindness. It occurs when diabetes weakens blood vessels inside your eye. These weak vessels leak fluid into an area of the eye called the retina. New, distorted vessels may grow, and then bleed. These vessels can damage areas of the retina, causing vision loss.
Vitreoretinal Diseases This specialty involves both the medical and surgical treatment of retinal and vitreoretinal disease. The types of diseases treated include manifestations of local, systemic and genetic diseases as they affect the retina and vitreous. Diagnosis involves the use and interpretation of ultrasound, fluorescein angiography and electrophysiology.
